Match Report
Impressive Shels put Cork to the sword
Cork City’s 12-year winless run against Shelbourne continues as goals in either half ensured a deserved 2-0 win for Damien Duff’s side.
The visitors set their stall out from the get go, controlling possession and the pace of the game with their high press forcing Cork to go long regularly and struggling to create chances.
Another big issue for City this season has been set-pieces which was evident again in 11th minute Josh Honohan headed into his own net after the hosts failed to deal with a corner.
Cork’s best chance of the half came two minutes from the break when Ruairí Keating’s lay off set up Barry Coffey. Unfortunately for the former Celtic player, his shot went just over the bar to keep it 1-0 to Shels’ at the break.
To compound City’s first half, they also lost Matt Healy to a groin injury which could rule him out of the upcoming International Under-21s game at Turners Cross.
The visitors picked up where they left off after the interval and doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Jack Moylan neatly tucked home into the bottom right-hand corner from just inside the box.
The goal saw Cork begin to push harder for a way back into the game and could have had a penalty when Ruairí Keating went down after Shane Griffin’s challenge.
Ethan Varian also came close from close range on the hour mark but chances were few and far between in a game which Shels’ were always in control of.
Another clean sheet for Duff’s troops while City will hope they don’t come to regret last week’s four dropped points as the season continues.
