Match Report

Shels move top for now

Shelbourne moved top of the Women’s National League for the time being after their comfortable 3-1 away victory against Cork City.

First half goals from Emily Whelan, Noelle Murray and Ciara Grant firmly put the Shels in the ascendency before Nathalie O’Brien reduced the deficit at the start of the second half.

Shels inched their way to the summit for at least a couple hours, before title rivals Wexford Youths and Peamount United lock horns tonight at 6:00 PM.

The defeat means Cork City remain in seventh just two points clear of bottom side Athlone Town, who play their game in hand tonight against fellow strugglers Treaty United.

City started the contest well with the match bursting into life in the early stages with real end to end action.

Shelbourne broke the deadlock through Whelan’s eighth goal of the campaign as she was assisted by a lofted through ball by Alex Kavanagh, and the striker slotted the ball into the net.

Three minutes later, Whelan went through on goal once more after being played in by the lively Jessica Ziu but Abby McCarthy came to City’s rescue.

But Shelbourne’s relentless pressure told as just a minute later Murray doubled the visitors lead as her outside the box shot was poorly dealt with by McCarthy, who palmed the ball into her own net.

Just before half time, the league leaders made it three as Ciara Grant got on the scoresheet after being picked out by another excellent pass from Kavanagh, and Grant’s delicate touch and powerful finish extended their lead.

However, City started the second half the better of the two sides and caught Shelbourne napping with a wonder goal by full back Nathalie O’Brien.

An attempted cross from far out on the left caught goalkeeper Amanda Budden off guard and the ball flew into the back of the net.

City were much improved in the second half but should have gone further behind due to poor clearances by their backline that McCarthy somehow kept the score line intact.

  • The weather in Cork is currently 18 degrees Celsius, with a wind of six mph, humidity levels at 73% and a very small chance of rain at just 1%.
