Match Report

Shels Hit Cork For Six In Dominant Season Opener

Megan Smyth-Lynch and Kayla Hamric both scored twice as Shelbourne began the defence of their title with a fine win over Cork City at Tolka Park.

Smyth-Lynch got her first goal five minutes from the break and then got a second in the 47th minute. Hamric was on target in the 66th minute and 84th minute. Siobhan Killeen had opened the scoring for Shels in the 22nd minute, sub Rebecca Devereux sealed a fine win with a goal in the 88th minute

Shels had the ball in the net in the fifth minute but Jessie Stapleton’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Five minutes later Megan Smyth-Lynch hit the crossbar with a neat strike. Shels broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute through Siobhan Killeen.

City had a chance to level four minutes later but Aoibhinn Donnelly’s effort was cleared off the line by Maggie Pierce.

Both sides had chances but it was Shels who got the next goal. Killeen did well before she laid the ball off to Noelle Murray who in turn found Megan Smyth-Lynch and she dinked the ball over Abby McCarthy in the 40th minute.

Killeen hit her shot straight at McCarthy in the 43rd minute as Shels began to dominate proceedings.

Smyth-Lynch and Killeen tormented the City defence and two minutes into the second half Smyth-Lynch grabbed her second and Shels’ third goal. She capitalised on a mistake by McCarthy to lob the ball over the City netminder.

One minute later a free from Alex Kavanagh went just wide of McCarthy’s post. As the game went on Shels manager Noel King began to empty his bench. Shels got a fourth goal in the 66th minute when Hamric picked up a loose ball and went through before firing to the net.

Substitute Ru Mucherera had a good chance for Shels in the 78th minute after receiving the ball from Smyth-Lynch. Smyth-Lynch was denied by McCarthy in the 84th minute but the ball fell nicely to Hamric and she made no mistake.

It was substitute Rebecca Devereux that got Shels’ sixth goal two minutes from normal time and it was Smyth-Lynch that was once again involved.
