Shelbourne Overcome Dogged Cork
Two first goals in either half were enough for Shelbourne to overcome a much-improved Cork City at Turners Cross.
Shels’ dominated the early stages as expected with Cork struggling to get out of their own half while also having to resort to the boot of goalkeeper Maria O’Sullivan to clear their lines.
The visitors made their early dominance count when Abbie Larkin scored the opening goal after five minutes. While O’Sullivan did well to save the initial shot, the rebound fell to Larkin who had the easiest of finishes to stroke the ball into an empty net.
To City’s credit, they didn’t let the goal deter their spirits and put in a resolute defensive performance, keeping Shels’ to long range efforts from Noelle Murray for most of the half.
Their best chance of the half fell to Christina Dring who found herself in acres of space inside the box but her first-time effort flew just over the bar of Amanda Budden’s net.
While City were unable to take their chance, Shels’ were clinical with theirs leading to the second goal of the game. This time it was former City player Saoirse Noonan who tapped home the rebound after O’Sullivan made an excellent save from Murray initially.
City did manage to apply some pressure of their at the end of the half but were unable to trouble Budden with the visitors heading in two goals to the good at the interval.
The second half was more end to end until the 56th minute when referee David Keeler awarded a penalty for a foul on Noonan. The replay would tell a different story however as The Cork native appeared to slip rather than take contact inside the box.
City fans would argue that justice was done when Murray’s resulting penalty hit the post to keep it at 2-0.
The penalty miss appeared to galvanise Cork who began to commit more players forward in search of a goal. Zara Foley went close on seventy minutes after attempting an audacious lob from thirty yards out on the touchline and nearly catching out Budden in the process.
That was as close as City would come with Noelle Murray and Lia O’Leary sealed the points late on for Shels with two low efforts into the bottom corner.
From a City perspective, it was a much improved display from last week while it’s business as usual for Noel King’s side who make it eleven wins from twelve matches.

Great save from O'Sullivan to deny a fourth while Eva Mangan went close at the other end for Cork.
Lia O'Leary makes it 4-0 after getting a free run into the box with just O'Sullivan to beat.
Kate O'Donovan hits a great strike from just outside the box but Budden is equally impressive in getting down to save.
Double sub for Shels as Gloria Douglas and Megan Smyth-Lynch come on for Abbie Larkin and Jess Gargan.

Zara Foley makes a great run down the right flank for Cork and tries an audacious lob from around thirty yards out from the touchline. It wasn't too far way either and made Budden work to make the save.
Good save from O'Sullivan to deny Noonan who got in behind the City defence. She did really well to come out quickly and get a hand on the ball.
The missed penalty appears to have galvinised Cork who are beginning to take a couple of more risks and committing more players forward. They've yet to trouble Budden in the second half however.
Penalty for Shels, Noonan slips but is deemed to be fouled. Hasn't gone down well in the Cross. Better news for the crowd moments later though as Murray hits the post and City survive.
Great little move by Shels there with their three Irish internationals playing a triangle in the box. West Ham bound Jesse Ziu finishes it with shot but it goes well wide.
Back underway. Lauren Singleton is on for City in place of Orlaith Deasy who picked up a knock in the first half.
Teams back out for the second half.
Half-time and Shelbourne lead 2-0. Noel King's side have been dominant as expected but Cork have been decent in patches. Next goal is crucial for either side.
Good pressure here from City as they win a couple of corners. The latest one ends with a shot from Ciara McNamara which flies over.

Half chance for Murray there from a quick free-kick but her shot hits the side netting.
Best chance of the game for City so far. Christina Dring is left wide open in the box but she tries to hit the ball first time which results in it flying over.
Noelle Murray nearly doubles the lead for the visitors. She finds herself in acres of space but her shot is tipped onto the bar by O'Sullivan who makes another great save moments later after a move from a corner.
Nathalie O'Brien is recieving treatment which gives the teams a chance for a much needed water break.
First foray into the Shels box for Cork but the ball rolls harmlessly into the hands of keeper Amanda Budden.
Latest spell of possession ends with a shot from Jessie Stapleton. Cork to their credit, have been resolute in defence since the goal despite seeing little of the ball.
Shels continue to press with a couple of corners coming and going.
Abbie Larkin opens the scoring for Shels, a good ball in and while Maria O'Sullivan makes a great save, the rebound falls to Larkin for a tap in.
