Match Report
In a sunlit stalemate, the real beneficiaries of this scoreless draw were league leaders Shamrock Rovers, as Derry City and Bohemians stuttering recent form continued. Early on, Adam O’Reilly’s dangerous set pieces almost unlocked the deep Bohs backline but Cian Kavanagh was isolated up front. On seventeen minutes, rubbing salt in the Colm Whelan injury wound, Kavanagh drilled a flashing volley past the post from Sadou Diallo’s cross, in a tense first forty-five, it would prove to be a big chance. Declan Devine’s Bohs, winners here earlier in the season, threatened on the counter and Declan McDaid was at heart of their best moves, home captain Cameron McJannet booked after former Candystripe James Akintunde outpaced him. Jordan Flores though was wasteful, twice blazing free kicks high over the bar. With Rovers widening the gap as they cruised past UCD, the impetus increased on both sides’ title aspirations as the second half started. Derry continued to dominate possession as the match progressed, but more attacking inaccuracy burdened them, O’Reilly and Diallo off target either side of a belter from Ryan Graydon which James Talbot swatted away. Yet Bohemians wrestled their way back into it, Flores firing a free kick over again before Paddy Kirk managed sufficiently better. The defender rasping a sublime half-volley from the D, in on Maher’s goal but it rustled the side netting. Michael Duffy smuggled an instinctive shot in late on but Talbot reacted quickly to grasp onto it as the Brandywell groaned in angst. A late penalty appeal, early on into added time, for handball appeals were declined by referee Damien MacGraith who harshly booked Ruaidhri Higgins for his protests as the game tricked out. Rovers the real winners of this draw, heading into now the mid-season break seven points clear. In a fortnight’s time, Derry host Cork City, hoping for a total reset after a paltry two points from their last four. Bohs travel to Tallaght, with all of us wanting a title race, hoping they can upset the odds. Sunlit stalemate at the Brandywell
