Match Report

Devine Delight As Bohs Snatch Three Points At The Brandywell

Dean Williams second half converted spot kick was enough to give title chasing Bohemians a big three points at the Brandywell, as Declan Devine made a winning return to the Derry venue.

Billed as a big top-of-the-table clash, the game at times lacked some quality, a game determined by a penalty and had both teams really looking to score from set piece routines. Derry were the better in possession but have now suffered consecutive home defeats.

Devine will be the happier of the managers, his side getting the three points after Kris Twardek was pushed in the area by Ollie O’Neill, it looked a penalty and despite Maher guessing correctly he was picking the ball out of his net.

A big three points for Bohemians as they can sit more comfortably at the summit of the league table, six points clear of Derry, tonight's results may cough up another challenger into the mix.

It was action immediately from the first whistle, in this top-of-the-table clash at the Brandywell, Bohs looked to draw first blood after a free was whipped into the box but it was dealt with, Derry went on the attack minutes later and won a corner, almost taking the lead themselves as Ryan Graydon had a free header at the back post but James Talbot was not troubled.

With six minutes gone, Derry had another chance to nudge ahead, Will Patching skiing his man on the left byline before a dangerous cross into the area was almost met by Jamie McGongile, the forward just not getting a touch to take it toward goal. Five minutes later a Ben Doherty corner brought supporters to their feet, it floated nicely to meet the head of Shane McEleney but his header went to the wrong side of the post.

All Derry early on in the tie but Bohs did have chances, a defensive error almost gave Dylan Connolly a real chance at making it 1-0, before McEleney got a block in, Kris Twardek had a great chance in the 22nd minute which forced a corner, Adam McDonnell floated a peach into the area, it hit the head of a Derry man and looked to be goal bound, but for a deflection off a Bohs man tangled with one of the Derry players, the ball stayed out and prevented a bizarre goal.

The hosts were creating plenty chances, all coming from patching set pieces, but they also looked well good in possession, able to swiftly move around the surface and try get in behind Bohs, Patching sent Graydon on the chase, a little bobble of the surface did not aid him as he had to play the ball back out for Patching to strike from range but McDonnell blocked it down well.

Minutes remaining in opening half had time to give us some late drama, on the attack Ollie O’Neill looked to be in a prime position to race in at the Bohs goal, but Grant Horton appeared to have held the Derry and Ireland U21 attack back as he failed to make headway, at the other end McDonnell stood over a dangerous free kick outside the Derry box but that went out for a corner.

Jordan Flores must have been itching to come on and take that free kick as it was an area he would have certainly looked to score from, McDonnell again dangerous putting a corner into the Derry box, and Horton headed at goal but it was wide of Brian Maher’s net. Level at the break, both really hitting hard from their set piece routines, as Derry looked that little more comfortable with the ball.

A poor start to the second half, most of the action coming from both teams having some rough tackles, Keith Buckley lucky not to be carded, while James Clarke, Dylan Connolly and Jamie McGongile all collecting cards.

The game came to life after 64 minutes, Derry had the fair share of possession in the opening exchanges, but after Kris Twardek received a pass inside the Derry area, he was bundled over by O’Neill, the referee pointed to the spot, up stepped Dean Williams, Maher would get a strong hand to it but the pace of Williams spot kick was enough to give The Gypsies the lead in the 66th minute.

With less than 25 to go it was a big end to the tie for Derry, they made changes and looked to put more bodies up front, but ran the risk of a counter, their best chance fell to McGonigle who had an effort fly wide of the goal, his effort toward the near post may have been the wrong choice in that instance.

Derry threw everything but the kitchen sink at it late on, floating crosses in that were headed clear, chance after chance as they passed with precision around their home patch, almost getting the leveller through Brandon Kavanagh, but James Talbot showed his quality to deny Kavanagh with a superb stop at his near post.

In added time it looked like Derry had snatched a draw as Brandon Kavanagh whipped a dangerous ball into the area but Cian Kavanagh just failed to get a toe on it to score.
