Match Report
Derry City close in on Rovers with win against Bohemians
Derry City moved to within just one point of league leaders Shamrock Rovers courtesy of an exhilaratingly entertaining 1-0 win against Bohemians at the Brandywell.
Michael Duffy was the matchwinner with a rocket worthy of winning any match.
However, the first half was overshadowed by a serious injury to Derry’s Ciaran Coll. The defender appeared to fall nastily on his neck and after a lengthy stoppage for treatment, he was taken to hospital and applauded off by all sides of the Brandywell.
Everyone here at FinalWhistle.ie wishes Coll a speedy recovery.
There had been a fast-paced tempo to the match but this, understandably, quelled, following Coll’s injury. Rory Feely had Bohemians best chance of the first half but couldn’t capitalise on a free header afforded to him in the Derry box.
Just as the match was drifting into dull territory, Duffy illuminated the contest. Ironically, it came from Shane McEleney’s botched pass which trickled to the winger.
From the edge of the box, Duffy released a sledgehammer of a shot, arcing unstoppably past the stunned Bohs keeper, Jon McCracken.
Patrick McEleney and Feeley spurned a decent chance apiece in the second half before Boh’s Ethan Varian, booked in the first half, squandered their best opportunity of the match.
Liam Burt, last week’s matchwinner against Shamrock, played him in but Varian, with a large portion of the goal gaping, could only shoot straight at Brian Maher.
That was the last big chance either side concocted as a raft of substitutions ensured a nervy finish for the home fans. Jamie McGonigle’s searing pace was an outlet the Candystripes frequently turned to as they grinded the victory out in the closing stages.
Derry host Sligo in the league on Tuesday hoping to keep the pressure on Shamrock before the top two sides meet in the FAI Cup quarter-final, a week on Sunday.
With Dundalk’s dramatic defeat at UCD, has the landscape of the title race shifted from a three-team to a two-team race?
Bohemians are also in Cup competition next, they travel to Shelbourne looking to salvage something from an underwhelming season.

Big result! Thanks for joining me & again, our best wishes go to Derry's Ciaran Coll in his recovery
FULL TIME: Derry City-1 Bohemians-0! HUGE 3 points for Derry!
CLOSE: End to end as McEleney (Shane) wins a crunching tackle & his hoof then releases McGonigle whose spearing speed wins a corner!
FIVE minutes added on
Two teenagers, Jamie Mullins & James McManus flung on late as Boh's prepare to fling the kitchen sink at it
The RTE commentators name Michael Duffy as man of the match- he's the matchwinner as it stands with that sumptuous rocket of a goal in the first half
Subs combine as Patching frees McGonigle who gallops down the left, whipping in a tantalising ball- but nobody is there to clinch what would be a nerve-settling second goal
Experienced Danny Lafferty replaces McJannet as we enter the closing stages. The crowd are edgy, this win would be so so crucial for Derry's title hopes
Sadou Diallo, another tireless performer for Derry tonight, has an ankle knock so Will Patching replaces him, not a bad sub to have!
CLOSE: Burt shimmies to the byline and his teasing cross across the goal face is bundled away by Ronan Boyce
McDaid jinks into the area but it comes to nought. Ruaidhri Higgins introduces Jamie McGonigle for the tireless Akintunde
Boh's third change: Max Murphy for Jordan Doherty
John O'Sullivan on for Bohemians
SAVE: Brilliant stop from Maher as Varian is played in on goal by the influential Burt! On the replays, Varian really should score that but Maher does well
McJannet is yellow carded for pulling back Burt
Feely, to give him his due, is marshalling the away defence superbly in the face of Derry pressure. He's made some important interventions with Akintunde, Duffy & Patrick McEleney all sniffing around with menace
Another Bohs corner, another free header for Feely. Again though, he can only direct it over the bar. Let-off for the hosts, that
Liam Burt, Boh's matchwinner last week, is sent scampering through but Maher rushes out, calmness personified, and clears well
As it stands, Derry will move to within one point of leaders Shamrock Rovers IF they win
Back underway! We are 15 minutes behind the rest of tonight's Premier Division games, for anyone keen to work out the league table ramifications
Half time arrives just before the hour mark: 1-0 to Derry City. Kris Twardek went off with an ankle problem in the last play, Declan McDaid was subbed on for him
Boh's striker Ethan Varion the first player booked tonight for an overzealous clamber on Mark Connolly
That goal has galvanised the home side, in particular. Winger Ryan Graydon is having a great battle with Boh's left-back Tyreke Williams, a fiercely fought one, I might add
14 minutes of added time following the earlier lengthy pause in play
GOAL- Michael Duffy. What a strike! Shane McEleney's hashed pass from a corner falls to the edge of the box and Duffy, cool as you like, bends a sublime first-time hit into the top corner! That's the ignition the match needed!! 1-0 Derry
Both teams are certainly going at it although neither goalkeeper, Brian Maher or Jon McCracken, have yet been tested
Rory Feely heads over for the visitors. Michael Duffy's tenacity then wins the ball back high up off of Feely but Duffy overcooks his cross
A sad sight as the stretcher comes on for Derry defender Ciaran Coll. A lengthy break. Al of us here at FinalWhistle.ie wish him a speedy recovery. Shane McEleney has come on for him. Full applause for Coll
A terrific tempo to match the fantastic atmosphere! Two early Derry corners come to nothing yet home striker James Akintunde looks lively so far
Kick off!
Teams emerging from the tunnel now to a raucous Brandywell!
The Bohemians team news is also now in. Kick off now twenty minutes away in what will, hopefully, be an entertaining match!
Derry make two changes from last week's 3-0 win over UCD. Ronan Boyce and Ciaran Coll start in defence with Will Patching fit enough to return to the bench
Good evening, I'm Rory Morrow and welcome to FinalWhistle.ie's live text coverage of Derry City vs Bohemians in the Premier Division tonight. Kick off is 7:45pm
