Match Report

Rovers Seal Students Relegation Fate

Shamrock Rovers confirmed UCD’s relegation from the first division this evening, their clash against The Students ending in a 0-0 draw.

A lukewarm performance in the first half, saw very few chances for The Hoops, struggling to break down a crowded UCD box. The second half resulted in much of the same, Rovers enjoying an outstanding majority of the ball but looked uninspired when tasked with creating a dangerous opportunity.

It proved a bittersweet result for both sides, Rovers failing to kill the title race but going unpunished by rivals Derry City, UCD turning in a fine defensive display in a season that’s saw so little, their life in the Premier Division chalked out regardless.

It was a tale of opposing faiths tonight in the Bowl as Shamrock Rovers inched closer to the league title while mathematically relegating UCD in the process with a 0-0 draw.

It was a tepid opener to the game, Rovers-as expected-lapping up the outstanding majority of possession, passing around the UCD box with ease but failing to muster up any sizeable chances. UCD also conformed to their expected game plan, sitting in a low block and protecting their penalty area relatively well-struggling to build the ball forward when they got it, Sean Brennan left completely isolated up front.

For the most part the game was devoid of any palpable intensity, as Rovers consistently failed to pull off the final pass of an attacking movement before UCD collected to clear long and restart the cycle all over again.

Rory Gaffney squandered the two best chances of the first half, failing to get a proper connection on a Graham Burke cut-back, before sending a header from point-blank range over the bar on the edge of half-time. As UCD began to close out the opening 45 minutes, Gaffney’s lacklustre finishing seemed to be emblematic of an overall complacent Rovers performance that lacked a killer edge.

The second half saw a more energetic start for Rovers, Lopes left as the sole defender in his own half as the rest of the back three marauded forward into the UCD half. Despite the continued onslaught of forward pressure from the visitors, The Students did extremely well to pack their box and suffocate any potential shots from a Rovers player.

Time after time Rovers looked to have found the decisive chance but were left lamenting their lack of quality in the final third, Arron Greene offering the best chance of the half as he fired into the side netting, a host of poorly drawn-up Rovers set-pieces collected by Kian Moore.

The blow of the full-time whistle represented a bittersweet result for each side, Rover stymied by their lack of cutting-edge yet still building on their league lead with Derry’s failures in Sligo, UCD turning in a superb defensive display in a season where they’ve shipped far too many goals, the performance coming weeks too late as their faith in the Premier Division was sealed.

Shamrock Rovers face a difficult task in their title run-in next week hosting Shelbourne at Tallaght, the three Ringsend derbies of the season having all finished in draws.

UCD make the long journey up North to face Derry at the Brandywell. With The Students’ faith already sealed, damage limitation seems to be the most likely goal for the remainder of the season.

  • 74'

The only silver lining so far for Rovers is that Derry has failed to eat into their league lead, their match in the Showgrounds standing scoreless.

Greene looks to have had found the breakthrough as he latches on to a cut-back from Clarke, but can only fire his effort into the side netting.

  • 61'

  • 42'

Verdon receives the first booking of the match for a cynical challenge on Clarke.

  • 37'

  • 31'

Burke attempts to find Gaffney in the box, O'Regan doing well to clear the cross.

  • 25'

It's been a tepid opener so far tonight...as expected Rovers have enjoyed practically all of the possession, and have pranced around the UCD box for plenty of time without mustering up any sizeable chances. UCD have started in a low-block, defending relatively well, but have been unable to progress the ball up the pitch as Keane finds himself isolated at the top of the pitch.

  • 18'

Burke's brought down on the edge of the D by Verdon. The ensuing free-kick sees Watts fail to clear the wall.

  • 14'

Two back-to-back corners for Rovers sees UCD defend well and restart their build-up from the back.

  • 8'

Farrugia darts into the box with the ball at his feet and draws a good save from Kian Moore.

  • 5'

Lopes lifts a well-placed from his own half into the feet of Gaffney in the UCD box, Gaffney's touch letting him down as it runs behind him and into the possession of Brennan.

  • 1'

Rovers get the action underway in the Bowl!

  • Tonight's clash marks one of Andy Meyler's last games at the helm of UCD, the club having confirmed that first team coach Willie O'Connor will take charge after the season concludes. Johnny Kenny remains out of the Rovers squad following an injury on international duty, while Jack Byrne continues to recover from a long-term knee issue.

  • All three meetings between the two sides this season have seen Rovers prevail victorious, boasting an aggregate score line of 10-0, The Students picking up just one point out of their last five league fixtures. “Our aim is to go there, perform and win the game. We know we need to focus and to respect UCD. It’s the same three points that were on offer last week in Derry or against Bohs or Dundalk. Nothing changes in our mindset,” Bradley said.

  • “We weren’t at our levels, and we gave up too much of the game because we were sloppy in our decision-making…They knew themselves and it was up to us as staff to make them understand why and how it was happening and make sure we improved in the second half, and I thought we were excellent second half.”

  • Last week saw Rovers pick up an important point against second placed Derry, Graham Burke firing home from the penalty spot late on to help maintain his side\'s grasp on the league title. Manager Stephen Bradley bemoaned his side\'s lethargic first half performance while speaking to club media: \"If you look back, anything Derry had in the first half, any momentum in the game or any chances they had, came off the back of us making really poor decisions that we don’t normally make and we made a lot of them in the first half."

  • Evening all and welcome to tonight's match coverage of UCD vs Shamrock Rovers. The two sides currently find themselves at polar opposites, a loss for UCD tonight will result in automatic relegation, while a win for Rovers will help bolster their four point league lead and aspirations for a historic four-titles-in-a-row.
