Match Report

Shamrock Rovers finish memorable year with win at UCD

A goal in both halves was enough for Shamrock Rovers to seal all three points this evening against UCD AFC at the UCD Bowl. Aaron Greene opened the scoring within the first 6 minutes before substitute Power doubled the Hoops’ lead in the last few minutes.

The away side battered the UCD box with a flurry of crosses in the early minutes and got their reward after just 5 minutes. After the Students dealt with the initial delivery, the ball came out high on the edge of the box and was headed goalward by Justin Ferizaj. It found the path of Aaron Greene who showed composure to swing low and find the back of the net.

The Hoops continued to pile the pressure on and had a penalty shout just minutes later when the ball struck the arm of Harvey O’Brien. Referee Derek Tomney waved away the protests, however, having deemed the arm low enough not to warrant a spot-kick.

It could have been 2-0 in the next phase of play when Aaron Greene once again had an effort on goal when he was found free at the back post. His header was initially fumbled by Kian Moore but he managed to eventually swat it clear for a corner.

As the first half progressed, Rovers settled down a little and UCD back 4 could breathe a little easier. Their next real chance came just after the half-hour mark when Ferizaj tried to set up Gaffney with a lovely dink over the UCD defence. Kian Moore was alive to the danger, however, and reached the ball in the nick of time.

UCD’s only real moment in the half came at the 37th-minute mark when Donal Higgins picked up the ball in the middle of the park with acres of space ahead to run into. After driving goalward he tried to selflessly set up Tobi Jinad who was unable to control the pass. Lee Grace did well to capitalise and clear the ball before being fouled by Jinad.

The second half carried on in much the same vain. UCD struggled to get a foothold in the game and Rovers enjoyed plenty of possession. It looked like there would just be the one goal before Power found space in the UCD box after a Sean Kavanagh corner kick to slot home and but the three points beyond doubt.

UCD’s best chance came with 20 minutes on the clock. An excellent header from Haist put himself and Tobi Jinad 2v2 with the backtracking Rovers defence. Jinad drove forward and returned the ball to Haist whose drilled low effort was well saved by Pohls in the Hoops’ net.

The three points were wrapped up at the 82nd-minute mark. A corner by Sean Kavanagh was not fully dealt with and Simon Power found himself in space to slot home past Lorcan Healy. The travelling fans were also off their feet 5 minutes before to welcome Andy Lyons onto the field upon his introduction. The full-back is moving to EPL Championship side Blackpool in January bringing to an end his very successful Rovers career.

It was no surprise that Rovers finished the season with a win against a UCD side who still have their Premier Division survival to fight for. Andy Myler rested many of his key players ahead of Friday’s crucial playoff against Waterford FC at Richmond Park.

Nonetheless, the Hoops remained professional throughout and will be pleased to finish their successful season with a win. Stephen Bradley can be proud of his side's accomplishments having topped the league and even had a spell on the European stage.

Farrugia has been impressive since his introduction against his former club. His hard work down the right flank eventually gives Power a chance to get a shot on target which is well held by Healy.

  • 77'

The second half has largely followed the first with plenty of possession for the visitors, Healy has been forced into a few saves but has been largely comfortable. UCD are trying to break when they can but finding chances few and far between.

  • 70'

Three changes for the Hoops as Simon Power, Gideon Tetteh and Aidomo Emakhu replace Greene, Gaffney and Ferizaj.

  • 57'

Jeers and whistles from the away fans as a rare UCD shot from Keaney finds row Z...if it was to exist in the Bowl.

  • 54'

Miss!... Ronan Finn won't want to see that one again! Rory Gaffney does well to find Greene who turns and shoots only for the ball to knock off the post and back in into the danger zone. Finn is alive to it but somehow blasts it wide.

  • 52'

Much of the same from both sides so far, Rovers with plenty of the ball as UCD try to contain the Hoops. Nothing to test half-time substitute, Lorcan Healy, just yet.

  • 45'

And we're back underway! 4 changes for UCD at half-time as Healy, Keaney, Gallagher and O\'Connor are introduced.

  • 45'

Half-time at the Bowl and Rovers lead 1-0.

  • 41'

Corner for Rovers comes after a good dribble and low cross from Rory Gaffney is dealt with by Sam Todd. Kian Moore does well to hold the subsequent set-piece.

  • 37'

UCD remind us of their threat as Higgins picks the ball up in the middle of the park with acres of space to drive forward. On the edge of the box, he selflessly tries to tee up Jinad to his right who ultimately could not control the pass. Grace manages to clear before being fouled by the Jinad and the danger is averted.

  • 33'

The first yellow of the game as Victor Serdeniuk goes in recklessly on Sean Brennan.

  • 32'

A lovely dink over the UCD defence by Justin Ferizaj has the away fans on the edge of their seats. Rory Gaffney almost gets there but Kian Moore is alive to the danger.

  • 28'

It comes to nothing as Caffrey's delivery is headed clear by Sean Hoare.

  • 27'

Chance for UCD to deliver a ball into the box as Lee Grace pulls back Tobi Jinad cynically but the referee decides to keep his cards in his pocket on this occasion.

  • 21'

Sean Gannon deals with the first real threat from UCD. Aaron Courish sprays a lovely ball diagonally across the pitch but Gannon stands up well to John Haist and deals with the threat. The Students are enjoying their first spell of possession all game here.

  • 17'

Ronan Finn is the next player to connect to a cross with the experienced midfielder bursting in late and directing his effort over the bar.

  • 13'

Chance! Greene gets his head on a cross to the back post which causes Moore all sorts of problems. The UCD keeper fumbles the ball before eventually swatting it out for a corner.

  • 11'

Appeals for a penalty as the ball appears to strike Harvey O'Brien's arm which Derek Tomney deems to be sufficiently low not to warrant a penalty.

  • 10'

Confident start from Rovers as you would expect. A lot happening down their right flank with Ronan Finn. Rory Gaffney also has started brightly by dropping into deep positions to disrupt the Students.

  • 5'

GOAL! Shamrock Rovers pound the UCD box with crosses and it pays off early! Aaron Greene pounces on the latest one to give the visitors an early lead!

  • 1'

Donal Higgins gets us going here at the Bowl!

  • Kickoff is just moments away here and Rovers fans give special applause for Andy Lyons. The wing-back is on the bench today and will be joining EFL Championship side Blackpool in January after a very successful stint at Tallaght Stadium. Touch of class as the UCD team gives the Hoops a guard of honour onto the pitch.

  • Final preparations are ongoing here as the Bowl packs up. Plenty of Rovers fans made the short journey for this Dublin derby so should be a good atmosphere!

  • UCD also ring in the changes and rest key players ahead of their playoff final against Waterford FC in just 5 days' time. Just 4 players Kian Moore, Evan Caffrey, Sean Brennan and Sam Todd retain their place from the 3-1 victory over Finn Harps last Friday.

  • 6 changes for the away side as Sean Gannon, Ronan Finn, Aaron Greene, Sean Kavanagh, Victor Serdeniuk and Justin Ferizaj are introduced.

  • Good evening and welcome to FinalWhistle.ie coverage of tonight's SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clash between UCD AFC and champions Shamrock Rovers. I'm Conor Paterson and I will be bringing you live updates throughout and a match report on full time.
