Match Report

Derry dish out defeat to Dundalk

Derry City returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Dundalk in Oriel Park to keep their title hopes alive.

A Will Patching double and a Ben Doherty goal just after the restart gave the Candystripes their first win the middle of August and kept them within touching distance of Shamrock Rovers.

Neither team truly dominated the first half, but both had plenty of chances. Dundalk’s best came from their debutant Sam Durrant after a lovely bit of ingenuity by Daryl Horgan allowed the ball to arrive at the feet of the Louth sides winger.

Derry got back well and had bodies on the line, but it was goalkeeper Brian Maher who made the difference, blocking Durrant’s shot well.

With under five minutes to go to half-time, Derry took the lead. It was Will Patching’s driving run which broke through Dundalk’s midfield, and he then laid it off to Paul McMullan.

The left-winger drove inside and then played it back to his midfield companion, who had continued his run into the box. The ball may have ricocheted off his arm but there was not much he could have done to prevent it, the ball dropped, and Derry’s number eight calmly tucked it away to the joy of the travelling fans.

Derry doubled their lead just inside the second half. Some lovely build up play down the right-hand side saw McMullan dig out a cross. It found Patching, once again in the box, and his deft touch took him around Brownlie. His finish was well saved by Sheppard by only out to Doherty who gladly poked it home.

To give the home side their dues, Dundalk had plenty of chances and one could argue Brian Maher was player of the match for his efforts in the Derry net. Patrick Hoban had a header crash back off the post and another cleared off the line, while Yli-Kokko had three chances in the space of three minutes, culminating in an effort coming back off the crossbar.

Derry wrapped up all three points in the 77 th minute. Patching was vital yet again as he drove in the home side’s box and an unexplainable challenge by Kelly felled the midfielder and gave the referee no choice but to award a penalty.

Patching dusted himself off and cooly converted the spot kick for his second of the night and Derry’s third.

Derry were unable to keep a clean sheet however, a penalty was given to Dundalk in the 95th minute when Daniel Kelly was fouled.

Up stepped Patrick Hoban and he converted a consolation for the home side.

Alfie Lewis on for Yli-Kokko for Dundalk.

  • 64'

Almost a second for Doherty as his looping half volley just rises over the crossbar.

  • 61'

A hat-trick of chances for Yli-Kokko, this the clearest as a poor Derry header falls to his feet and the Finn hammers the crossbar with a shot.

  • 60'

Maher with a brilliant save from a Yli-Kokko to push it onto the bar and then even better as he pushes it away.

  • 58'

Yli-Kokko fires over from a difficult angle as Dundalk try find a way back into this.

  • 52'

Dundalk hit the post as Kelly gets down the wing and whips a cross to the back post to Hoban and his header comes crashing back off the woodwork!

  • 47'

A goal just before the break and a goal just after for Derry! A cross by McMullan finds Patching who takes a fantastic touch past Brownlie, but his shot is saved by Sheppard, only as far as Ben Doherty who taps home to double the away sides lead!

  • 45'

    Second half kicks off here.

  • 46'

Half time at Oriel Park and it is Derry leading at the break. A sloppy game in truth and Patching fantastic bit of play the difference thus far.

  • 44'

Almost two as McEleney blasts over from a cross, Derry in the ascendency going into half time.

  • 42'

1-0 Derry! Its Will Patching against his former club and he creates it himself really, driving forward and laying off to McMullan. Patching continues his run and is found by his teammate, the balls bounces up and may have hit his arm but he then tucks it away into the bottom corner. The Candystripes lead just before the break.

  • 40'

A deep corner from Horgan is met by the head of Muller and yet again Maher is equal to it. The following corner sees Hoban head onto the roof of the net, Dundalk piling on the chances now.

  • 32'

First real opportunity for Derry as a lovely combination between Mullen and McMullen result in the former swiveling and firing over from close range.

  • 25'

Another Dundalk yellow, a silly one this as Leahy drags down Mullen on the half way line.

  • 23'

A well struck half volley by Horgan is fisted up and out by Maher, Dundalk with another decent chance there.

  • 19'

First booking of the game goes to Daryl Horgan for a high challenge on Coll.

  • 10'

First big chance goes to debutant Durrant for the home side. Lovely bit of skill from Horgan as he lets the ball run, leaving the Dundalk winger with a free shot at goal but Maher makes himself big and blocks.

  • 5'

An end to end game in the opening few minutes, both sides with lovely spells of play.

  • Underway here at Oriel Park.

  • Dundalk also boosted by the returns of Robbie Benson and John Mountney to their bench.

  • Three changes for Dundalk with Patrick Hoban among them tonight. As for Derry, they are without the suspended Diallo and in come the likes of Sam Todd and Shane McEleleney.
