Match Report

Dundalk And Derry End Losing Streak In Dramatic Oriel Stalemate

Cian Kavanagh's header cancelled out a crazy sixty seconds where Dundalk scored twice in the second half, to see the spoils shared in Oriel Park, as Dundalk finished with ten men.

Billed as a big tie between two heavyweights, it lived up to the occasion, on a traditional Sunday Afternoon fixture, 2,377 was the attendance and they all got their money’s worth in a dramatic tie, where both sides end their recent losing streaks.

Derry took the lead late in the opening half through Ben Doherty, then crazy scenes as Robbie Benson and Johannes Yli-Kokko scored within a minute, but substitute Kavanagh had the final say, Dundalk hung on late on as Wasiri Williams was shown a straight red card.

The first real chance of the game fell to Derry and almost brought the first goal, Ben Doherty with a dangerous corner which Dundalk cleared, but it fell to Sadou Diallo on the edge of the box, he fired a shot that cannoned off the Dundalk crossbar, a few inches lower and Sheppard would have been beaten, real venom in that effort from the Derry man.

After nine minutes Dundalk almost got a chance of their own, John Martin almost setting Keith Ward away but Brian Maher did well to come out of his box and clear, all coming from a counter attack from a Derry free kick as they played short and were dispossessed.

Derry continued to attack well, Ryan Graydon whipped a dangerous ball that almost met the head of Jamie McGonigle but a Dundalk head cleared the danger before Derry had a chance, minutes later Ciaran Coll hit a snapshot over the crossbar after Doherty's free-kick causes danger in the Dundalk area.

On the 24th minute a warm ring of applause was heard around Oriel Park in memory of Private Sean Rooney who lost his life last December, he had ties to both areas where these clubs are based, a nice touch from both sets of fans, as “There’s only one Sean Rooney” chants were heard around the ground.

More good play from Derry continued to put Dundalk under pressure, Graydon crossed into the area, just went a little too far as Doherty won a corner, from that set piece it looked like Coll had a chance but Graydon headed toward goal instead but was saved, minutes later Adam O’Reilly with some great build up play, he could have had an effort but he fed Doherty but his shot was blocked by Hayden Muller.

Greg Sloggett was stretchered off to add to Dundalk’s recent woes, looked to have been an ankle issue but will need to know more in the coming days to the severity of the injury, on the field however, almost out of nowhere, Archie Davies had a strike on the edge of the box that needed Brian Maher to save, from the resulting corner Davies had another shot but this one was skied over.

The deadlock would be broken after 44 minutes, Doherty and Graydon both combining, Doherty was mobile on the wing but he came narrow, received the ball from Graydon and curled a beautiful left footed strike into the far bottom corner of the net past the outstretched Nathan Sheppard. They had the lead but were forced into a change in added time as Jordan McEneff felt unwell on the field and was replaced by Will Patching.

With just three minutes elapsed in the second half, Doherty almost doubled his side's advantage in the tie, he snuck past Davies at the back stick and after Graydon crossed into the area, Doherty hit a half volley on goal but he failed to get it on target.

Davies again fancied his chances after 57 minutes, his effort had Maher scampering back to his line in the Derry goal as he was unsure where it would land, two minutes later again Doherty’s corners causing issue for Dundalk, his second met the head of Cian Kavanagh who had came off the bench, but his header met the turf and went over the crossbar.

Pat Hoban came close to drawing Dundalk level in the 64th minute, his glancing header from a dangerous inswinging free kick by Keith Ward needed Maher to get down well to save, chances were there for Dundalk, Hoban would have liked a better contact on that one to steer it goal bound.

In a crazy bizarre sixty seconds of football Dundalk went from being behind to ahead, Ward stepped up to take a corner, he whipped into the area which Robbie Benson headed home, then as Derry took their tip off, they made a mistake Johannes Yli-Kokko took possession to break through and fire home a second, utter madness and wild scenes at Oriel.

Dundalk pressed for a third minutes later as Rayhaan Tulloch fired an effort toward goal but it was wide, at the other end they had to defend as their visitors looked to come back, from a WIll Patching free kick in the 78th minute they would draw level, as Cian Kavanagh muscled his way to head past Sheppard to make it 2-2.

Chances came as both ends late on, Darragh Leahy had a header at goal, while Davies needed to do well in defence to stop Michael Duffy getting away, momentum swung Derry’s way late on as Wasiri Williams was shown a straight red card after a horror tackle on Derry’s Ollie O’Neill.

Michael Duffy almost struck late for Derry on a return to Oriel, Derry were dangerous and had a chance when O'Neill whipped in a cross for Cameron McJannet to head it in but the ball was judged to have gone out, Duffy then curled a shot past the post, relief from the home supporters as the spoils shared

  • 1'

Robbie Benson kicks us off in Oriel Park

  • Late change for Dundalk as Darragh Leahy replaces Andy Boyle, Robbie Benson will now skipper the side

  • Kick off fast approaching in Oriel, billed as a top quality tie will it live up to that we will have to see

  • Form is temporary, class is permeant, an age old saying that both teams can say reflects their history, Derry have been a solid show this year but a slight dip will not send them crashing down the table, but three points here is needed if they are to catch back to Bohs who dropped points on Friday to Pat's.

  • Derry really have felt the sting of the last week's round of games, Easter Monday they were sluggish in a poor game against Bohs, while Drogheda left them frustrated and also left with points, hopefully for them it is still not on their minds coming into this afternoon's tie.

  • Ruaidhri Higgins’ men have also hit turbulence in recent weeks. After an impressive 1-0 win against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, Derry’s last two games, at home to Drogheda United and league leaders Bohemians, have resulted in one-goal defeats. Despite that, they still lie just six points adrift of Bohemians, now they hope to turn that tide with an away tie at the Louth venue.

  • In their reverse tie in March, the sides finished in a 0-0 stalemate at the Brandywell, but Dundalk are in a rut of form and need a big result to get them back up the table, thankfully from their point of view Cork losing on Friday did not see them drop further down the rankings.

  • Despite that, the Lilywhites know that a win over the Candystripes would lift them up to fifth place in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division table and put them firmly back amongst the chasing pack behind league leaders Bohemians.

  • Both sides go into the game looking to halt a poor run of form. Dundalk’s 1-0 loss against Cork City at Turner’s Cross on Easter Monday was their third league defeat on the spin, and their fourth in all competitions; the club’s worst run since Stephen O’Donnell took charge in December 2021.

  • Derry make three changes from the defeat to Bohs, out go Will Patching and Ollie O'Neill who make the bench, Patrick McEleney is out of the matchday squad, in come Sadou Diallo, Cameron McJannet and Jordan McEneff, great news for Derry however as Colm Whelan and Michael Duffy make the bench

  • Dundalk make four changes from Monday’s defeat in Cork. Wasiri Williams, Robbie Benson, John Martin and Keith Ward all start., while Paul Doyle and Patrick Hoban are named on the bench.

  • Oriel Park is the venue for what feels like a real throwback tie in the league, Sunday afternoon football, an original timeslot in the league, with two historic sides in action, neither in great form of late, Derry losing their last two home ties, while Dundalk have lost their last three games, my name is Diarmuid Kearney and I will be updating all the action from this big tie in Louth
