Match Report

Clinical Shelbourne Prove Too Good for Cork

Goals from Harry Wood and Sean Boyd helped Shelbourne ease to a 2-0 victory of Cork City at Turners Cross this evening.

It was a pretty scrappy start to the game with Shels' happy to put men behind the ball which made life difficult for the City midfield to make any inroads.

The first chance of the game fell to City's Josh Honohan who went close with a header from Barry Coffey's corner in the 10th minute. Set pieces would be a theme for the hosts throughout the first half although Shels' were able to hold firm.

While being defensively solid at one end, Shelbourne managed to be clincial at the other as Harry Wood provided a tidy finish on 20 minutes to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

City were dealt another set of blows as Joe O'Brien Whitmarsh and Barry Coffey were forced off through injuries while Jaze Kabia made his debut.

Coffey had a chance before going off at half time with a a decent shot which flew just over the bar as the visitors led at the break.

Indeed it was Shels' who started the better in the second half although to their credit, City did well to survive the early spell of pressure.

Their response included a chance of their own through Kevin Custovic whose volley went just wide on the hour mark.

That chance was the impetus for City to push forward and a series of corners followed before a Rokas Stanulevicius forced a great save from Conor Kearns in the 65th minute.

That pressure was undone however in the 74th minute when substitute Sean Boyd doubles Shels lead with a clinical left footed finish.

That proved to be the clincher as Shelbourne eased home to a 2-0 victory to keep in touch with the European places.
