Wexford Up to Fourth With Win Over Longford
Goals in each half from Luka Lovic and Aaron Dobbs saw Wexford move up to fourth in the table with victory over Longford Town at Ferrycarrig Park.
The home side were full value for their win as they extended their unbeaten run to six league games. For the Town it was their second defeat in a row and another below par performance.
Lovic opened the scoring in the 31st minute and Dobbs grabbed his 14th goal of the season in the 53rd minute.
The home side took the game to the Town straight from the start. Town’s passing on a number of occasions was slack and they offered very little to threaten the Wexford defence.
A mistake from the Town gifted the home side the first chance of the game in the third minute; Kian Corbally played the ball to Darragh Levinston and Dylan Hand was back to deflect it out for a corner.
The visitors had half chances but nothing to trouble Wexford keeper Owen Mason. The best chance of the half fell to the home side in the 19th minute when James Crawford’s corner found Dobbs at the far post but he headed just wide.
Wexford piled on the pressure and forced Town into conceding a number of corners. The deadlock was broken in the 31st minute when Crawford’s corner was powerfully headed to the net by Lovic for his tnird goal of the season. It was no more than the home side deserved.
Kyle O’Connor’s low cross was gathered by Mason in the 37th minute. Near the break Hand shot over but it was poor from the visitors in that opening half.
The home side doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute. Thomas Oluwa did well, he played the ball to Dobbs, he found the space before firing to the net.
Town manager Stephen Henderson decided to empty his bench after that and made four changes. But despite new personnel they created very little.
Wexford substitute Mark Hanratty had a few chances but couldn’t find a way past Town netminder Jack Brady. In the 90th minute Town substitute Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh brought a good save out of Mason.
