Match Report

O’Brien-Whitmarsh Shines On Longford Debut

Beineón O'Brien-Whitmarsh bagged a brace on his debut as Longford saw off Wexford 3-0 at Ferrycarrig Park in a very impressive display by the away side.

Longford had the opening chance of the game 13 minutes in when defender Viktor Serdenuik saw the ball drop kindly to him from a corner that failed to be cleared by Wexford, the Ukrainian struck his half volley beyond Wexford keeper Charlie Heffernan but the ball was blocked on the line by the body of Reece Webb who had gotten round on the cover to clear.

The game then fell into a lull as it approached half time with lnot so much as a sniff of a chance for either side. That changed however when the game simply exploded for the last five minutes of the half, starting with the headed finish of Longford striker O’Brien Whitmarsh who’s lobbed header on 40 minutes from a hopeful cross left keeper Heffernan stranded in no mans land after he failed to claim the cross as the ball bounced into the empty net.

Less than two minutes later it was 2-0 when Josh Giurgi met Jamal Ibrahim’s low front post cross first to pass the ball into the bottom left hand corner, doubling Longford’s advantage.

Wexford may actually feel they should have been level going into the break however as firstly Aaron Dobbs fluffed a one one one, only able to hit the Longford goalkeeper Jack Harrington with his unmarked effort from 8 yards, followed mere moments later by left back Ben Lynch poking the ball only into the side netting after his driving run had isolated him with only Harrington to beat, but the full back could not provide the Wexford lifeline and Longford ended the half 2 goals in the lead following the madness.

Wexford came into the second half searching for a way back into the game and it was only some heroic Longford defending that kept them out. Ethan Boyle had a shot deflected just over the bar as a fantastic Kyle O’Conner tackle sent the ball which was destined for the net looping inches over after 55 minutes.

Three minutes later Cian Byrne cleared a header from Matthew Dunne off the line that had Harrington beaten all ends up, though the keeper did make an impressive stop to deny Corban Piper’s thumping header from the resulting corner.

It was all to prove in vain though for Wexford when a mazy dribble across the box by Ibrahim gave the Longford winger time to pick out O’Brien Whitmarsh who took aim low back across Heffernan and duly made it 3-0 as he found the bottom corner to put the game beyond the reach of Wexford after 68 minutes.

Dobbs and Giurgi both had good chances to add to the scoreboard on separate occasions as they found space in the right hand channel of the box, but both efforts were poor and from then on in the game slowed. With the result certain, Longford were understandably more concerned with holding onto the clean sheet rather than adding another.

Though they very nearly did with the last kick of the game when Darragh Lynch’s close range effort was tipped brilliantly onto the bar by Heffernan in what would be the games last action.
