Match Report
Aaron Dobbs struck twice in the second half to complete a comeback win for Wexford, as he came back to haunt his former Employers at Bishopsgate. Town will be left incensed as Gary Armstrong seemed to have been struck off the ball and was down as play continued for Dobbs second, they also finished the game with 10 men as they could not replace Armstrong as they had used all three stoppages after an issue with the fourth officials board forced them to an additional stoppage. All goals came in the second half as the rain eased and with it we had a game of football on our hands, Fran Campbell put Longford ahead with a goal that Charlie Heffernan will not want to see back as it slipped through his gloves, but Dobbs was the hero in the end for Wexford. It was a tight scrapy opening few minutes at Bishopsgate, no clear cut chance occurred for either side, but there were promising signs for Wexford as they looked much the better, a chance headed off the Longford line the best of the early action as the elements were causing an issue. Aodh Dervin struck a free kick that flew over the Wexford goal, a game that lacked chances, that was an early one that went missing for De Town, they had possession but just were unable to really test their visitors. Darragh Levingston was next to have a chance for Wexford, but his shot from range was well wide of the mark, at the other end Kyle O’Connor was almost set free from an error in the Wexford backline, but enough bodies were there to stop him having a shot at goal. Conditions remained bleak, as standing water started to lodge on parts of the Bishopsgate surface, the ball holding up in places, it was making life difficult in a game that lacked quality and chances, Ethan Boyle had a shot on the half volley from the edge of the box, that flew wide of the Longford goal, a final chance of a dismal opening half that had no shots on target.. Whatever Stephen Henderson said at the break seemed to work for Longford, Dervin made a strong drive in midfield, three minutes into the second half passing to Fran Campbell, he struck from outside the area, the shot looked saved by Charlie Heffernan in the Wexford goal, but it slipped through his gloves and landed in the net, a first shot on target in the tie. After that the goal the intensity picked up and Wexford were starting to again show signs of life, they had possession but it took until the hour mark for them to register a shot, James Crawford coming close from a free kick that skidded along the wet surface but unlike his opposite number, it landed safely in the hands of Jack Brady. Minutes later it was almost 2-0 to De Town, Shane Elworthy with a lovely cross on the right wing which met the head of Josh Giurgi, but his header was limp and straight at Heffernan who managed to save well and cling onto the ball. Plenty of former Longford faces in the Wexford side, it was one of these faces that drew the tie level after 65 minutes, Aaron Dobbs managing to get a shot off after a Mark Hanratty header into the box was not dealt with and the ball rolled in past Brady. One former man scored and almost could have seen two ex names link up, former fan favourite Karl Chambers came off the bench and made a great run to get into a dangerous spot, he passed to Dobbs who struck at goal but Brady was down well to deny him a second. Town again looked to create chances, a couple of corners brough danger as Heffernan might have been a bit shaky after his earlier mistake, Wexford were defending well however, the best Longford chance coming from Viktor Serdeniuk, as the Ukrainian almost scored an acrobatic effort but it landed in the hands of Heffernan. But five minutes from time Dobbs would have the final say, he got his head onto an effort from distance from Aaron Doran, the glancing header after the ball came his way, wrong footed Brady and rippled the back of the Longford net. Town pressed late on in search of an equaliser, with ten men it was to be a struggle as Armstrong was off, they almost had the latest of late equalisers through Cian Byrne, but his thunderous strike was wide.Dobbs Returns To Give Wexford Three Points At Bishopsgate
