Magerusan Leads Longford To Second Win Over Galway

They say lightning never strikes twice but it did for leaders Galway Utd this season because for only the second time they lost a league game and it was again away to Longford Town.

Cristian Magerusan’s 10th goal of the season, scored in the 30th minute, proved to be the difference.
The visitors huffed and puffed and tried as hard as they could to get an equaliser but the Town stood firm for another memorable victory

The visitors huffed and puffed and tried as hard as they could to get an equaliser but the Town stood firm for another memorable victory

In a very open first half. In the fifth minute Oisin O’Reilly cross into the box was headed over by Rob Slevin. The home side had their first chance in the ninth minute; Magerusan did well to win the ball, he played it to Jordan Adeyemo, he in turn found Adam Wixted and his low drive was deflected out for a corner.

Killian Brouder headed over in the 19th minute while down the other end Lewis Temple headed wide from a Wixted free. The deadlock was broken in the 30th minute. Kyle O’Connor did very well down the left, he played the ball to Adeyemo and his cross was finished to the net by Magerusan - that was his seventh goal in five games.

In the 35th minute O’Reilly headed over David Hurley’s corner. Adeyemo was unlucky not to get a decent touch on a fine delivery from O’Connor in the 41st minute.

The visitors started the second half well. Town keeper Jack Brady got down to save Ed McCarthy’s strike in the 49th minute and one minute later Brouder’s effort just went over.

In the 52nd minute Lomboto went down in the box looking for a penalty but the referee Paul McLaughlin was not fooled. Wixted should’ve done better with his effort in the 55th minute.

A corner from Hurley in the 70th minute met the head of sub Stephen Walsh but Town keeper Brady pulled off a stunning save to keep his goal intact.

Two former Town players who came on as subs combined in the 84th minute to create a glorious opportunity for the visitors. Hurley played the ball to Rob Manley he took a shot but it got a touch off Brady and that worked wonders because it trickled past the post for a corner.

Sub James Doona had a chance to grab a second goal but his shot just went wide.
