Match Report

Galway defeat valiant but youthful Longford

David Hurley scored a brace as Galway Utd extended their lead at the top of the table with victory over a hapless Longford Town side.

Hurley opened the scoring for Galway in the 48th minute and scored their fourth from the penalty spot in the 88th minute. Rob Slevin and Conor O’Keeffe were also on target in this fine win for John Caulfield’s side.

The home side had a lot of possession in the first half but the Town defence stood firm and keeper Jack Brady didn’t have to really work himself.

Aaron Walsh and Viktor Serdeniuk both cleared the danger for Town in the opening minutes while down the other end Jamal Ibhrahim won a corner for Town in the eighth minute but it came to nothing.

Cristian Magerusan brought a save out of Galway keeper Brendan Clarke in the 17th minute. Town continued to frustrate the home side but as half time approached Galway created a number of chances.

Vincent Borden’s strike was blocked down in the 34th minute. Regan Donelon’s effort was deflected out for a corner by Walsh in the 37th minute. Substitute Francely Lomboto and Stephen Walsh but had chances that went just wide before the break.

Galway Utd came out with a real purpose for the second half and broke the deadlock in the 48th minute. Slevin played a neat ball to Hurley and he hit a lovely strike past Brady.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Conor McCormack’s free was headed home by Rob Slevin. Galway continued to create chances as they went in search of more goals,

In the 58th minute McCormack played his corner to Ed McCarthy and he curled his effort inches wide. Gavin O’Brien turned Lomboto’s shot out for a corner in the 73rd minute and one minute later Brady pulled off a fine save to deny Walsh.

From the corner that was taken by McCormack and O’Keeffe got the vital touch at the back post to get Galway’s third goal. Town just couldn’t get a hold on the game. Before the end of normal time Gavin O’Brien took down substitute Ronan Manning and Hurley slotted home the penalty.
