Match Report

Longford stun Galway at Bishopsgate

A stunning display from goalkeeper Jack Brady earned Longford Town a terrific win over league leaders Galway Utd.

The only goal of the game was scored in the third minute by Mohamed Boudiaf. After that Galway piled on the pressure but the Town stood firm with Brady immense in the Town goals.

It’s the first league defeat of the season for John Caulfield’s side but great credit to Longford Town.

Brady brought off a save with his feet inside the second minute to deny David Hurley. One minute later and the home side took the lead. Mohamed Boudiaf picked up possession and it ended up in the net.

In the 10th minute Stephen Meaney did well to keep the ball in play, it eventually fell to Viktor Serdeniuk but his volley was just wide.

Down the other end Brady saved an Ed McCarthy effort. In the 12th minute Brady made an excellent save from Robert Slevin’s header.

Brady was by far the busier keeper in the first half but he dealt with everything well and was ably assisted by his resolute defence.

Stephen Walsh’s header over the bar in the 38th minute. The home side enjoyed possession in the minutes before the break but they failed to put pressure on Brendan Clarke in the Galway goal.

Galway laid siege on the Town goal from the restart. They won five corners inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half. For all their pressure they didn’t create any opportunities.

In the 68th minute Jamal Ibrahim crossed into the box but Aodh Dervin just couldn’t make a connection with it. Stephen Walsh’s overhead kick in the 71st minute came off the crossbar, Mikie Rowe’s header was gathered on the line by Brady.

Changes were made by both managers with Galway bringing on Mikie Rowe, Rob Manley and Darren Clarke. Town manager Stephen Henderson brought on academy player Emmanuel James.

A free from Hurley in the 83rd minute met the head of Walsh but he directed his effort just wide. In the fourth minute of stoppage time Josh Giurgi played the ball over to Ibrahim and he brought an excellent save out of Brendan Clarke,
