Match Report
Waweru Haunts Town In Colman’s Park
For the third time this season Wilson Waweru was on target as Cobh Ramblers defeated Longford Town at St. Colman’s Park.
Waweru had scored in Ramblers’ two previous 1-0 wins over the Midlanders. His goal came in the 37th minute. Jack Doherty sealed the win for Shane Keegan’s men right at the end.
This result is Town’s fourth league defeat in a row.
In a first half that was typical of an end of season encounter. There was no real urgency in the game.
The visitors created the first chance in the fourth minute; former Ramblers player Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh played a lovely ball over to Cristian Magerusan but he didn’t connect properly and his effort went wide.
In the eighth minute Mikie Rowe’s free-kick just bounced wide. Michael McCarthy did very well in the 22nd minute, he got into a good position before playing the ball back to Cian Browne but it's on his weaker foot and it doesn’t trouble Jack Brady.
In the 27th minute Doherty found the back of the net but the goal was ruled out for offside/interfering with play.
The home side had another good chance in the 34th minute; McCarthy played the ball to Rowe and his effort came off the crossbar, it fell to Browne but he blasted the ball over the bar.
In the 37th minute the home side broke the deadlock. Ramblers were awarded a free after Lewis Temple fouled Doherty. The former Town player stepped up to take the free, it was parried by Brady and Waweru finished it to the net.
Town very nearly equalised straight away but former Town keeper Lee Steacy pulled off a fine save to deny O’Brien Whitmarsh.
In the early stages of the second half Derek Daly had a chance but his tame effort didn’t trouble Steacy. In the 56th minute Waweru picked up the ball, played it into Doherty but he put his effort over the bar.
Town netminder Brady pulled off a fantastic save to deny Luke Desmond in the 65th minute, tipping an excellent strike onto the crossbar. Down the other end the crossbar came to Ramblers’ rescue as O’Brien Whitmarsh’s cross came off it.
In stoppage time Doherty got on the scoresheet when he grabbed a second goal for Ramblers.
