Match Report
Waweru Elevates Cobh Into Third Spot
Wilson Waweru’s fourth goal of the season saw Cobh Ramblers record their first win since the beginning of May against Longford Town at St. Colman’s Park.
Waweru headed home in the 50th minute to give Shane Keegan’s side a much needed win. They moved up to third, albeit it for a few hours.
Town finished the game with 10 men after substitute Darragh Lynch was given his marching orders for a foul on Justin Equaibor in the 84th minute.
Both sides enjoyed spells of possession in the early exchanges but didn’t create anything to really trouble either keeper. It was a very evenly matched contest.
Cristian Magerusan had an early chance but Ramblers keeper Lee Steacy got it at the second attempt. Darragh O’Sullivan Connell’s ball fell to Charlie O’Brien in the eighth minute but his effort was blocked and put out for a corner.
Adam Verdon hit a fine effort in the 29th minute. It was parried by Steacy but he got to it at the second attempt ahead of Magerusan. Minutes later Jamal Ibrahim cut inside but he hit a weak effort at Steacy.
Down the other end the home side pressed and won a number of corners but they came to nothing. Jack Doherty hit a free that Town were able to clear. On the stroke of half-time Magerusan was fouled and Cian Byrne took the free but his effort went over the bar.
Two minutes into the second half O’Sullivan Connell’s shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Town keeper Jack Brady. The deadlock was broken in the 50th minute when O’Brien’s ball in was headed home by Wilson Waweru. Ibrahim went on a fine run in the 53rd minute before playing the ball over to Josh Giurgi but Charlie Lyons got back to block down his effort.
The home side went in search of a second goal. In the 58th minute Waweru’s header came off the post. Then in the 69th minute Breandan Frahill’s header was cleared off the line.
In the 71st minute Byrne found Magerusan at the back post but he looped the ball over the bar. Town were reduced to 10 men in the 84th minute when Lynch was shown a straight red for a foul on Equaibor. Lynch had only been on the pitch five minutes.
