Longford dig deep to deliver win in Cobh

Longford Town came from behind to come away from St. Colman’s Park with all three points in an entertaining clash.

Ramblers took the lead in the eighth minute. Danny O’Connell started the move, he played the ball to Pierce Phillips who played a one-two with James O’Leary before firing past Luke Dennison.

Town were back on level terms in the 17th minute when Dylan Barnett scored from the spot after Joe Doyle was fouled by Harliab Mbayo.

The visitors bossed the second half and went ahead in the 49th minute when Ben Lynch’s pinpoint cross was headed home by Cristian Magerusan. Aaron Robinson made it 3-1 10 minutes later with a stunning strike but Ramblers pulled a goal back through sub Jake Hegarty in the 61st minute.

Shane Elworthy restored Town’s two goal advantage in the 66th minute with a fine finish after poor defending from the home side.

Ramblers started well with Danny O’Connell very much involved in a lot of their good play. He hit the side netting in the seventh minute and one minute later started the move that led to Ramblers taking the lead through Pierce Phillips..

In the 12th minute Ramblers came close to doubling their advantage; Luke Desmond hit the post with his effort, the ball fell to O’Connell and he brought a fine save out of Dennison.

The visitors started to get into the game and in the 17th minute they were back on level terms; Dylan Barnett from the penalty spot.

Karl Chambers should’ve done better with his header in the 36th minute after a Barnett corner. Chambers, who was unmarked at the far post, directed his effort wide.

Town started the second half well and went ahead in the 49th minute; Ben Lynch’s pinpoint cross was headed home by Cristian Magerusan. Down the other end Desmond’s effort was cleared off the line by Shane Elworthy.

Joe Power’s fine shot just flew across the goal while Aaron Robinson’s strike came off the post. In the 59th minute Robinson scored Town’s third goal with a superb finish after a back flick from Magerusan.

Ramblers pulled a goal back two minutes later when Sean McGrath’s cross was flicked to the net by Jake Hegarty.

In the 66th minute Elworthy restored the Town’s two goal advantage with a fine strike after some poor Ramblers defending.
