Match Report
Longford edge past Cobh in six goal thriller
Longford defeated Cobh Ramblers 4-2 at St Colman's Park this evening in a fixture that started slowly but exploded into life in the second-half.
Jordan Adeyemo got the visitors off the mark after he poked in a pacey cross in the final minutes of the first period.
Sean McGrath struck the top-corner for Cobh on 58 minutes after James O'Leary put him in on goal.
Mark Hanratty would put Longford back into the lead on 65 minutes and doubled their lead with a powerful half-volley ten minutes later.
A fantastic bicycle-kick from Cobh substitute Darragh O'Sullivan Connell saw Cobh back into the game late on though Harlaib Mbayo received a second-yellow soon after to see them go a man down.
Darren Clarke struck in the 89th minute to put the game beyond doubt for Longford.
The teams produced an underwhelming encounter for much of the first-half, with inaccuracy marring the half-chances close to goal created by either side.
Longford's Jordan Adeyemo came close to scoring early on when he received the ball in the Cobh area but his shot was deflected out for a corner by the foot of a Rams defender.
On 13 minutes, Cobh's Luke Desmond could have done better with his close-range attempt in De Town's box but he shot over.
The home side came within inches of taking the lead in the 20th minute when Matthew Dunne's defensive header would see the ball come off his own crossbar.
Longford tough, looked the more threatening going forward with the pace and power of Adeyemo troubling the Rams' backline.
The striker would have two back-to-back chances as Longford began to apply pressure as half-time approached.
Adeyemo turned well to lose his marker in the Cobh area on 38 minutes and fired across goal only to be denied by the post. The ball rebounded back to him at pace but his off-balance follow-up went over.
Soon after the striker would have his goal when he beat the Cobh centre-backs to net the game's opener.
The second-half began with Cobh U19 Darragh Burke replacing the injured Paul Hunt in goal and the 'keeper passed his first test when he stopped a powerful Adeyemo free directed right at him.
The hosts would get back on even terms when McGrath struck though it wasn't long before they fell behind again.
Hanratty took advantage when the ball fell to him off the back of a Cobh defender in the area to send Longford back ahead and netted again ten minutes later to make it 3-1.
O'Sullivan Connell's fantastic goal threatened to make it a dramatic ending but Clarke's late strike across Burke ensured all three-points would go to the play-off bound visitors.
