Match Report

Kelly grabs point for Bohs

Having only been on the pitch a single minute Georgie Kelly rescued a point for Bohemians against Sligo Rovers in the Showgrounds tonight in the final game of the season.

The 77th minute strike cancelling out a sensational goal from Johnny Kenny in the first half , the Premier Division’s top scorer will be hoping to bring his superb form into the upcoming FAI Cup final.

A bright start for the home side was epitomized by the Ireland u19 star and Riverstown native Kenny, channeling his trickery on the outside of The Gypsies box before cutting the ball inside and into the back of keeper James Talbot’s net.

Mark Byrne, Greg Bolger and John Mahon then went on to pick up a yellow card a piece for tactical fouls from then until the halftime break, while the visitors attempted to get the ever dangerous Dawnson Devoy more as the game progressed.

The second half saw Bohs turn up the heat in Sligo town, Mallon and Buckley having an especially huge impact for them when they replaced Keith Ward and Conor Levingston in the 56th minute.

Liam Burt and Ross Tierney then both came close to equalising, but it took Kelly entering the fray in place of Tyreke Wilson for the game to metamorphose to 1-1.

The ensuing time saw both sides give the match their all but despite sic minutes of injury time no winner was unearthed before the final whistle.

Sligo will be satisfied to have redeemed a patchy middle to end third of the season with European football already wrapped up before this fixture but given Derry City’s 2-1 triumph over Dundalk this evening the FAI Cup final has taken a whole new importance for Bohemians.

Missing out on fourth place by two points as a consequence to the Oriel Park outcome, they now will have to rely on a first class showcase in the Aviva on Sunday week when they come to blows with St Patrick’s Athletic.

  • Nearly time for kick off in the Showgrounds

  • Sligo's team is in! McGinty, Bolger and Kenny are back in the lineup while Buckley is replaced in a precautionary measure by Blaney. It's Shane's first appearance since August after his comeback from injury

  • “The pressure is off when it comes to sealing the European place but the pressure isn’t off when it comes to winning games.”  “We owe it to ourselves to finish off this season as best we can… We’ll do our utmost to win the game and sign off in the best way possible.”

  • Speaking on the clash Sligo manager Buckley says that while they were “disappointed” with their performance last week his side will seek to improve” today. “I thought we improved in the second half but we still needed to be more clinical in our play. We needed to be more ruthless in general” he said.

  • In comparison, the results between Sligo and The Gypsies have went both ways with two wins for the Yeats County and their most recent encounter seeing the capital city scraping all three points back in August thanks to a Keith Buckley net.

  • Bohs on the other hand beat champions Shamrock Rovers 3-1 at Dalymount Park, sealing three wins from three against their Dublin Derby rivals throughout the year. A Lee Grace own goal opened the scoring and Daniel Mandroiu equalised for the Hoops before the upcoming cup finalists finished up the game with a strike a piece from Promise Omochere and Rob Cornwall.

  • A Jamie McGonigle brace was the undoing of Liam Buckley’s men there as Rovers were without Ireland u19 star Johnny Kenny, who was on international duty, stakeholder keeper Edward McGinty who was absent due to illness and captain Greg Bolger who was injured. All three return to the squad once again this evening, as does Robbie McCourt who picked up a knock during the game.

  • The Bit O’Red will conclude the season in third no matter the outcome having secured a European spot two weeks ago but have to make good on their most recent 2-0 loss away to Derry City last series.

  • With one eye on the FAI Cup final Bohemians still need to come away with a result from their match versus Sligo Rovers in the Showgrounds tonight to wrap up fourth place.
