Match Report

Wexford secure draw away to Cork

Cork suffered a dent in their automatic promotion charge tonight as they drew 1-1 at home to Wexford.

It was the visitors that started the better of the two sides in the opening ten minutes. Despite the bright start, Ian Ryan’s side were unable to create a meaningful chance to test David Harrington in the City goal.

City took over soon afterwards with Ruairí Keating going close in the 17th minute after making a great run in behind the Wexford defence. His shot however was saved by goalkeeper Alex Moody who was very impressive for the visitors.

The home side would get their breakthrough however in the 23rd minute after a moment of brilliance from left back Kevin O’Connor. He received the ball out on the corner of the left touchline before coming in and taking a right footed shot which found the bottom corner.

Wexford responded well to their credit with City defender Allie Gilchrist having to clear the ball off the line in order to retain the goal lead on the half hour mark.

The final chance of what was scrappy half fell to Barry Coffey but his effort flew away to the right and wide.

While the first half may have been cagey at best, the initially beginning to the second period burst into life straight away through Wexford striker Conor Davis.

The former City player managed to level proceedings after Harringtons save from a corner rebounded to the Derry native who duly found the net and silence the home crowd in the process.

The goal appeared to have City rattled as tensions began to boil over between the two teams. Ruairí Keating and Aaron Dobbs were fortunate to get away with yellows after inciting handbags just before the hour mark.

While Cork regained the ascendancy in the push for a winner, Wexford never looked under severe threat and picked up a deserved draw to keep themselves in the play-off places.

City on the other hand will need to bounce back quickly as they travel to Galway in the biggest game of the season so far.
