Frustration for Wexford in Cork draw

Wexford FC will be frustrated after failing to score in their 0-0 draw against a 10-man Cork City side in tonight’s First Division game at Ferrycarrig Park.

The hosts dominated large parts of the opening half and they were boosted when Alec Byrne received his second yellow just before the break for a hard tackle on Conor Crowley. However, they failed to convert on any of the chances that they created.

Wexford began this game slowly, as they were forced into conceding possession through long passes, thanks to Cork’s high pressing. City enjoyed the majority of the ball and chances in the opening 20 minutes. Darragh Crowley failed to head home their best chance of that period.

Much of City’s attacking output came down the left flank in the form of Dylan McGlade. He caused numerous problems with his mazey dribbles and his set-piece delivery.

The hosts edged their way into the game after the half-hour mark and came close twice right at the end of the first-half. Both chances from Karl Fitzsimons resulted in saves from Mark McNulty.

In the 44th minute Alec Byrne received his second yellow after failing to get the ball in a 50-50 with Conor Crowley. This was to prove to be the turning point in this contest.

Cork’s gameplan in the second-half was a stark contrast to the opening 45 minutes. They sat very deep, allowing Conor Crowley and Jack Doherty time on the ball. The duo were instrumental in creating chances for the hosts in a dominant second-half display.

However, Wexford failed to convert any of those opportunities. Paul Fox flashed the ball across the face of goal but nobody was on the end of it. Doherty blazed a close range effort over the bar after Daniel Dobbin picked him out with a great cross. Jack Moylan carved out some nice chances through his dribbling but ultimately had a quiet game along with his strike partner Kyle Robinson.

The result means that Cork City go ahead of Cobh Ramblers on goal difference, while Wexford remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. Both clubs play at home next week, as Wexford host Galway United, while UCD travel to Turners Cross.
