Match Report

Shels top temporarily with win over Waves

Jemma Quinn opened her goalscoring account for the season with a brace that saw
Shelbourne move to the top of the table, albeit it for a few hours at least.

Quinn opened the scoring in the 35th minute and got her second in the 87th minute. DLR Waves battled throughout but rarely tested Shelbourne keeper Courtney Maguire. It’s a third defeat in a row for Graham Kelly’s side.

Shelbourne thought they had opened the scoring early in the game. A ball in by Alex Kavanagh was headed home by Christie Gray in the ninth minute but it was ruled out for offside.

Kavanagh hit a fine strike in the 15th minute that went wide while in the 19th minute Noelle Murray’s effort was off target.

DLR had some good patches of play but didn’t create much to trouble Shels keeper Courtney Maguire.

The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute. Murray played the ball into Quinn, she rounded Rugile Auskalnyte before shooting to the net from a tight angle.

Minutes later Quinn had a shot that was blocked, the loose ball fell to Kavanagh but her powerful strike just went inches wide. Down the other end Maggie Pierce had to defend well as DLR tried to get back on level terms.

Just before the break Gray dragged her shot wide as Shels looked to double their advantage. Both sides had opportunities in the early exchanges of the second half but failed to bring a save out of either keeper.

Auskalnyte pulled off a terrific save to deny Quinn her and her side’s second goal in the 59th minute. The visitors tried to work their way into the game. In the 72nd minute Isobel Finnegan’s corner from the right found the head of Katie Malone but she directed her effort straight at Maguire.

The intensity of the game dropped in the second half. Clear-cut chances were at a premium after the break and neither keeper was made to work too hard. Quinn sealed the win for her side three minutes from the end of normal time when she grabbed her second goal.
