Match Report
Kavanagh class for Shels in WNL TV debut
Shelbourne grabbed all three points in the first Women’s League of Ireland match to be shown live on TV, as they defeated DLR Waves 1-0 at Tolka Park.
Alex Kavanagh opened the scoring for the hosts just before the half, with a cheeky chipped effort from outside the box.
Despite the valiant second half efforts of Waves, Shels held on to their one-goal lead.
The hosts started the better of the two teams, though there were periods of Waves possession, the best chances came for the Reds.
In a sensational move, Jessie Stapleton backheeled the ball into Saoirse Noonan, who only had the ‘keeper to beat. The number 11 placed a shot on goal, but only found the arms of Eve Badana.
Badana was to be beaten though, as minutes before the whistle for half-time, Shels broke. A quick passing move made its way to Kavanagh, who dinked the ball towards the Waves net. It dipped nicely and the DLR ‘keeper looked dumbfounded as the strike nestled into the top corner.
With a disappointing half behind Waves, they came out for the second raring to go.
With five minutes gone, Jetta Berrill had the perfect chance to equalise. A mix-up in midfield allowed her to knock the ball past the defender and run in on goal. One-on-one she hit it straight at Amanda Budden, who did excellently to make herself big.
Pressure from Waves came in, well, waves. The addition of Carla McManus gave the visitors plenty of energy up top. She had a shot wide herself, before setting up fellow substitute Catherine Cronin for a blocked effort.
The Reds showed cool heads under pressure, and stood firm. They saw out the final minutes with controlled possession in the DLR half to claim the victory.
It’s a fantastic way for Shelbourne to recover from their 5-0 loss to Peamount last time out, not the best performance, but a win nonetheless. Waves can take some positives, but they lacked final third quality.

Big tackle from Shauna Fox! DLR tried to counter, but Fox was having none of it. She sent her opponent and the ball flying.
Four added minutes.
It's hold it up in the corner time for Shels. They're keeping the ball nicely in the Waves half.
It's just not quite happening for Waves. Donnelly tried to pick out a fellow Waves player on the left, but it goes out for a goal-kick.
Shels look happy to take the 1-0 at the moment. Can DLR keep up their pressure and grab a goal late on?
Burdis and Letmon are off for Waves.
Prior and Brierley are on for Waves.
Doyle is on for Shelbourne.
Mustaki is off for Shelbourne.
Despite the one free-kick for Shels, DLR have had the better of the second half so far. They need a goal though.
Donnelly has a crack from distance, it deflects, but Budden is equal to it.
Murray chips a free-kick into the box, it finds Noonan, but the strikers pass across the goal is easily taken by Badana.
Cronin links up nicely with McManus in the box, she gets it back off the number 20 before shooting, but the shot is blocked.
With the changes, Waves look energised and are starting to put pressure on the Reds. Will it result in a goal though?
McManus shows some early energy by sprinting onto a ball into the box. She lashes at the ball, but the effort is well over.
Carla McManus is on for Waves.
Malone is off for Waves.
Katie Malone spreads the play brilliantly out to Letmon, who can't cross accurately.
It's been a quiet few minutes. Shels are struggling to get the ball moving quickly up the pitch and keep hold of it. Waves have been solid in defence so far this half.
Catherine Cronin is on for DLR Waves.
Shaune Carroll is off for DLR Waves.
Murray has a chance to head at goal from a Jess Gargan cross. She puts her effort straight into the 'keepers arms.
Jetta Berrill with a golden chance! A mix up in midfield allowed her to knock the ball past the defender and run in on goal. One on one she hit it straight at Budden, who made herself big.
First chance of the half goes to Waves as Nadine Clare heads over. It wasn't troubling the 'keeper.
Pearl Slattery puts an end to DLR's early efforts in attack with a no nonsense clearance.
It's back underway at Tolka Park.
Half-time: Shelbourne 1-0 DLR Waves
Badana looked dumbfounded as she turned to see the ball sneak into the top corner.
Goal Shels! Kavanagh chips the ball from outside the box and finds the back of the net!
Some brave DLR defending prevents Noelle Murray from striking on goal. The tables have turned once again, Shels have some confidence all of a sudden.
They do feed Noonan, and the striker bombs past the defence, she's one on one, but can't do anything but place her shot straight at the 'keeper.
The roles have changed over the past 20 minutes, DLR are dominating the ball, and now it's Shelbourne looking to counter attack. The home side need to just feed Noonan, she's been the best player on the park so far.
Noonan is the architect for Shels yet again as she lays the ball off to Stapleton. The number 3 curls a shot on goal, but Badana is equal to it.
A ball down the flank is well cut out by Budden, as she charges out of her goal to tackle Shaune Carroll. It was a dangerous move, but it came off.
After Shels dangerous start, DLR are taking control of the game. They keep coming wave after wave in attack, playing some good football.
The ball falls nicely for Berrill just inside the box. On the turn she hits the target, but Budden saves comfortably.
A free-kick wasted by Shaune Carroll. In a promising wide position, and she whipped it into the side netting. Surely putting it into the box would have been more effective than shooting?
A better spell for Waves in the last few minutes. A couple of balls played into the box, and maintained possession. However, the Reds still look dangerous.
Noonan is the star of a great move from Shels, she nutmegs her marker, then plays in Murray. The winger is unfortunately offside.
Ciara Grant makes a smart run in behind the DLR defence. She can't quite reach the pass towards her though. Shels have no doubt had the better start.
Shels look comfortable to hold onto the ball and take their time. Waves have been poor in possession so far, and the ball keeps coming straight back to the Reds.
Saoirse Noonan takes down a long ball on her chest, and hits it on the half-volley. The ball flies over the bar.
Stapleton hits the post from a corner! So close as she meets the ball brilliantly, it crashes away off the post from her diving effort.
It's been a scrappy five minutes. Neither side has been able to carve out a chance. Waves have given the ball away sloppily once or twice courtesy of Donnelly, but Shels haven't capitalised.
First action of the game, as a Carroll cross is easily claimed by the 'keeper.
And we're off! This historic game gets underway.
