Match Report

Shelbourne keep pressure on Wexford with victory against Waves

DLR Waves will rue the concession of two quick-fire Shelbourne goals as the home side really took it to the Women's National League champions at Whitehall.

While Megan Smyth-Lynch and Jessie Stapleton gave the league chasers the perfect start it was Kate Mooney's goal for DLR that gave the Waves hope they could cause an upset in the league run-in.

Despite 'wave after wave of attack from DLR they couldn't breach the resolute Shelbourne defence for a second time and the Reds still look to be on course for a showdown match up with Wexford on the final day of the season.

Shelbourne took the lead with Megan Smyth-Lynch latching onto a clever back pass from Noelle Murray who got on the right side of Lynn Craven - Smyth Lynch stuck it the first time beating Bandana as it struck the post en route to goal.

The reds added a second with a corner that was initially cleared and was played back to Noelle Murray who crossed a pinpoint cross to the back post to Jessie Stapleton who headed it powerfully past Bandana.

DLR responded brilliantly with an initial cross-shot from Sarah McKevitt was spilt by Amanda Budden and the Shelbourne keeper can't stop Kate Mooney from pouncing on the loose ball and tapping it past her to reduce the deficit to one.

In the second half, DLR continued to press but could not break the Shelbourne defence. They did however come close when Kate Mooney headed goalwards only for it to be cleared off the line.

Eve Badana kept the score to one making two goal-line saves from corners from Megan Smyth-Lynch whose set-piece delivery had been a threat all day.

Aoife Brophy had the best chance of the second half to level the terms as she played it through the Shels' defence and got her shot away with her effort just going over the crossbar and landing on the roof of the net.

Shels did attack but Keeva Keenan couldn’t convert two guilt edge chances. The race goes on for the title but DLR will feel they could have had a big say in this season's race.
