Match Report
Early goals sink Waves
A first half goal from Emily Whelan and a second half penalty by Noelle Murray gave Shels all three points against a tenacious DLR Waves side at Tolka Park this afternoon.
Waves finished strong, with a superb 35-yards strike from Carla McManus, under the watchful eye of Women’s National Team manager Vera Pauw.
The Reds took control of the game early on, pinning DLR back in the opening 15 minutes. However, they were unable to break the strong defence of the South Dublin side.
As Waves grew, the game became tit for tat with a Nadine Clare shot whizzing over the bar from 20 yards.
Shelbourne's first big chance fell to Whelan after a stunning surge forward and pinpointed cross by full back Jessica Gargan. However, the former was unable to cause too much difficulty for Eve Badana in the Waves goal. DLR hit back with an attack of their own but Niamh Priors shot was easily headed away.
A breakthrough came once more when Whelan was again played in by Jessica Ziu. This time however she made no mistake, with a looping shot beating Badana who rushed from her goal.
At this point Shels were firmly in control with a penalty shout waved away in the 43rd minute. The half ended with a Shelbourne free on the edge of the box. However, Jessie Stapleton's effort was straight at Badana.
The second half started a much livelier affair, with both clubs showing attacking intent. DLR thought they had their equaliser when Catherine Cronin hit the back of the net. This was ruled out for offside. Moments later Cronin popped up to force a sublime save from Budden in the Reds goal.
Ten minutes into the second half, Shels midfielder Jamie Finn went on a solo run beating several DLR players, but her strike was tipped over the bar by Badana.
From the resulting corner the referee blew his whistle for a penalty, as the ball was headed back across goal when it inadvertently struck the arm of a DLR defender. Noelle Murray stepped up for the Reds and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
DLR made a host of changes to attempt to get back into the contest. After a sustained period of pressure substitute Carla McManus spotted the keeper off her line and struck from 35 yards out to beat the back-peddling Amanda Budden. This a moment of brilliance which may have caught the eye of Vera Pauw in the stand.
DLR pushed for an equaliser in the final minutes, with a free kick in injury time spilled by Budden only for her to get a second attempt and see the ball to safely.
Shels held out in the closing stages of an entertaining game to claim all three points and the top spot in the league. This ensures that they have bounced back from their recent loss at the hands of Peamount, and handing DLR their first defeat of the season.
