Match Report

Rebecca Cooke’s up Shels win

Rebecca Cooke’s 87th minute winner secured a vital 2-1 win for title chasing Shelbourne away to DLR Waves at Jackson Park.

The loss effectively ends Waves’ slim outside chances of a title push, as they now trail the top two by nine points.

Shelbourne remain level on points with league leaders Peamount as they thrashed Treaty United 5-1 today.

Noel King’s side were the better of the two in the first half and put the home side under serious pressure.

Waves goalkeeper Eve Badana made a fantastic save after Ciara Grant’s cross was met by a spectacular overhead kick from Saoirse Noonan, but the strike was met by a spectacular save.

Noonan continued to test Badana and forced a good save to deny the midfielder’s well-struck low effort.

Shelbourne took the lead through Noonan at the start of the second half with a brilliant finish into the top corner from close range.

Waves responded well to going a goal behind as Niamh Prior put in a cross from the right that picked out Katie Malone, and the striker’s first-time effort bounced just wide of the post.

Pushing for an equaliser, manager Graham Kelly made a pivotal triple substitution and brought Jetta Berrill, Rachel Doyle and Shauna Carroll into the game.

Carroll and Avril Briierley brilliantly combined to pick out Berrill, who equalised from close range with a low fine finish.

Good approach play from Shels produced a chance for Grant, who had a shot from 25 yards out but was well saved by Badana.

Waves were dealt a scare from the following corner as Cooke directly hit the top of the crossbar.

It looked as if Waves had frustrated Shels, until three minutes from time as substitute Cooke’s 30-yard screamer left Waves’ goalkeeper Badana with no chance and stole the points for the Shels.

Next weekend sees Waves take on Bohemians, whilst Shelbourne are in action at home to struggling Treaty United.
