Match Report

Pats strike late to take points off Drogheda

St. Patrick’s Athletic left it extremely late in Richmond Park, three late goals from Mason Melia and Chris Forrester forming an emphatic victory over Drogheda United.

Like their previous matches, Drogheda showed their class in the opening stages, Darragh Markey and Dylan Grimes consistently finding joy down the right flank, putting in dangerous crosses that narrowly evaded the head of Freddy Draper each time.

Pats grew into the game from that point on, Jake Mulraney proving key in progressing the ball down the channels.

The best chance of the half fell to Chris Forrester who picked up on a loose ball in midfield, driving in on goal and breezing past Conor Keeley. Forrester opted for a strong, low-driven shot that was met by the boot of keeper Colin McCabe and deflected out for a corner.

As the first half dwindled to an end both teams looked to have subsided notably-either side struggling to produce any sizeable challenges that could break the deadlock.

Both Jon Daly and Kevin Doherty faced the difficult task of attempting to rejuvenate their blunt attacks at the interval, Tom Grivosti replacing Vladislav Kreida as the second half got underway.

The following forty-five minutes certainly proved to be more open-ended, Pats proving lively with Mark Doyle nearly heading home from a Sam Curtis cross to give his side the advantage.

Drogs nearly went ahead against the run of play-Keeley producing a bullet header that drew a brilliant save from Dean Lyness, the keeper pawing the ball to his left and out of danger.

But like the first half, the pace of the game again began to peter out, both sides seemingly content to languish in their mid-table positions.

There were still chances here and there, Forrester again latching on to a Curtis cross at the back post and firing a shot that required an instant reaction save from McCabe, but neither side were prepared to shift the dial of the game significantly.

However, The Saints did begin to find a groove extremely late. Melia headed home from a rebound in the 80th minute to make it 1-0 and from that point on Drogheda cracked.

Forrester finished from point-blank range to make it two, and then The Saints captain again found himself on the break, rounding McCabe and slotting home to make it 3-0 as the home crowd erupted into euphoria.

Both sides face the difficult task of facing Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium next, The Hoops having now taken pole position in league standings following Derry’s defeat of Bohemians. Pats play next Monday while Drogs will wait until Friday to make their way up to Tallaght.
