Match Report
Galway home win streak continues over Athlone
Galway United maintained their position atop the First Division with a 3-1 win at home over Athlone Town tonight.
David Hurley gave the hosts the lead before Stephen Walsh added a second. Franz Pierrot gave Athlone a lifeline, but Killian Brouder ultimately sealed the points for the league leaders.
Galway started off on top and were rewarded in the 10th minute. Following a nice one-two out left, Francely Lomboto burst into the Athlone box and was taken down by Patrick Hickey, who left the ref with no choice but to point to the spot. David Hurley stepped up and although Velikin guessed the right way, he found the net.
The hosts remained on top for the rest of the half and in all honesty, Athlone were lucky to be only 1-0 down. The ref waved away a few potential Galway penalties, in particular challenges from Noah Van Geenan on Stephen Walsh and Valeri Dolia on Edward McCarthy looked iffy. On both occasions Galway were ruled against and didn’t manage to win another spot kick.
Just a couple of minutes before the half Walsh was unlucky not to get one from open play. A ball to the back stick from McCarthy was met with a header that managed to hit the bar not once, but twice. Athlone eventually cleared and must’ve felt relieved to go into the half only 1-0 down.
Galway got their second in the 52nd minute. A goalmouth scramble ensued following a corner and Walsh got the ball. With his back turned to goal, he turned and slammed it into the net emphatically to give his side breathing space.
Athlone were given a lifeline in the 65th minute when substitute Josh McGlone rolled a pass into Franz Pierrot, who was dragged down by Maurice Nugent. Pierrot stepped up and sent Clarke the wrong way to set some nerves about the opposition.
The league leaders showed they wouldn’t be denied however just six minutes later when David Hurley swung a free kick in low that proved awkward for Athlone to deal with. The ball hit off the post and rolled across the line for Killian Brouder who poked it in, sealing the three points.
The win means that Galway have still only dropped points on one occasion this season and look like champions elect already. For Athlone on the other hand, they’re now without a win in four.

Full time.
Five minutes added on.
Pierrot is receiving treatment. Things could go from bad to worse for Athlone here.
McCarthy hits the bar with a header! Was very nearly 4-1.
Goal! An awkward Hurley free kick isn't dealt with, hits the post and Killian Brouder pokes it in! Galway have breathing room again.
Goal! He sends Clarke the wrong way and out of nowhere, Athlone are back in it!
Penalty! Nugent brings down Pierrot and Athlone have a potential lifeline!
Another lengthy stoppage. Play resuming now.
Lennon ball to the back stick is met by Hickey but he can't direct it in.
Goal! Walsh slams it in following a goalmouth scramble! Lovely finish and a more than deserved second for Galway.
Back underway.
Half time.
Galway having another series of corners right now. Athlone probably cannot wait for the half time whistle.
Four minutes added on. The McCormack injury being a major factor there.
Unbelievable! McCarthy's cross to Walsh is met with a header and it hits the bar twice before being cleared! Very hard luck on Galway.
O'Reilly's cross into Walsh is a good one but Walsh gets too under it and blares it over.
Borden has a lovely strike at the near post well saved by Velikin. Galway look a good bet for a second before the interval.
Walsh receives the ball in the box, turns and swivels, shoots, but it's just wide. Bitterly unlucky.
McCarthy nicks it off Dolia on the edge of the area, gets kicked by Dolia but Dolia wins the free. Again, a contentious decision by the ref.
McCormack looks set to continue, but that was a lengthy amount of time to receive treatment.
Leal and McCormack have a full blooded challenge and Leal is booked. McCormack wins the free.
Velikin juggles it in the goalmouth and wins a free out eventually.
Galway are racking up a lot of corners. Pressure up these last few minutes.
Hickey plays a hospital ball to Van Geenan and he takes down Walsh in the area. Ref waves away the very justified claims. Athlone look asleep playing it out at times.
Rodriguez challenges Walsh for the ball and wins it. Did look iffy however.
And Hurley slots in in despite Velikin going the right way. 1-0 Galway!
Penalty! An onrushing Lomboto bursts into the area and Hickey takes him down. Yellow card.
Lomboto wins a corner. Early pressure from Galway.
Velikin tips over a Nugent header. Good cross from O'Keeffe.
We're off.
Teams are out, kickoff is nigh.
Looks like a smashing evening for a game of ball.
Athlone played spoiler in Galway last season when a win in Terryland handed Cork City the title. Galway will be looking to avoid a similar upset.
Galway are looking to tack on yet another win to this unbelievable season they're having whilst Athlone are looking for a first win in three. Eamonn Deacy Park is a less than ideal place to go to when that's what you're looking for.
