Galway Hold Out To Secure Consecutive Win in WPD

Galway United picked up their second win on the bounce with a 2-1 win over Athlone Town in Lissywollen tonight.

Julie Erickson gave the visitors the lead from a corner that was followed up by an Abbie Callanan tap in following a goalkeeping mishap. Dana Scheriff would give Athlone a lifeline, but to no avail.

It was all quiet up until Galway broke the deadlock in the 18th minute. Following some decent football, they won a corner out right. The attackers crowded the area around the keeper and Lynsey McKey sent it right into the mixer. The seemingly training ground routine worked as Julie Erickson rose highest to head.

Athlone had a penalty claim waved away just a minute later. Muireann Devaney was on the ball and Eve Dossen came from behind in an attempt to take the ball from her. Although the challenge was risky, it looked as if the Galway defender won the ball and play went on.

Galway doubled their lead in the 38th minute in fortuitous fashion. A throw-in to McKey was controlled and hit on the half volley by United’s #10. What should have been a routine collection for Nyla Peterkin was dropped and Abbie Callanan followed up for a tap-in.

Athlone had another penalty claim waved away on the brink of half time. Following a cross from the right that Jessica Berlin flapped at, Devaney had a crack at goal. Julia Beletic blocked the effort and Athlone pleaded for a penalty but once again, the ref wasn’t interested. Galway went into the half two goals to the good.

Dana Scheriff was brought on for Kate Slevin at the half. Scheriff looked excellent for the town last season before suffering an ankle injury that ended her season. She made sure to make an impact on this as soon as she had the chance.

In the 64th minute Athlone were piecing together some good football and it resulted in Madison Gibson bombing down the left wing. The American sent a low drilled cross that her compatriot Scheriff met for a tap-in, marking her long-awaited return with a goal. No matter the eventual outcome, this was a special moment for Scheriff and her side.

Athlone pressured the rest of the way but never really threatened Galway. Tommy Hewitt’s side have now registered two losses in their first four. Galway on the other hand have followed up Saturday’s win over Shelbourne in pretty good fashion.

Goal! Peterkin drops one right at her from McKey and it falls to Callanan for a tap in.
