Match Report

Byrne’s brilliance delivers Athlone win

Captain Fantastic Kurtis Byrne's wonder strike won it for Athlone Town, with the only goal of the night in their First Division clash with Galway United at Lissywoolen.

What a goal it was, deserving of winning any match as Athlone's skipper stepped up when his team were starting to get a foothold in the match converting from outside the box after dumming three or four United defenders before finding the top corner.

Galway started the first half strongly, with four corners inside the opening seven minutes, and a handful of long throws from Brouder ensuring Athlone's defence were well and truly under pressure.

As we approached the 10th minute mark the floodgates opened not in terms of goals but rain, and it had an impact as it bucketed down for the remaining half an hour.

The now faster pitch seemed to suit the hosts, their practice on the all weather pitch proving beneficial as they started to pass and move the ball more comfortably and started to get a foothold in the match .

As the half went on not many chances were created, and the sides went in 0-0.

Athlone with a clean sheet - something new manager Paul Doolin would have been hoping for since his appointment.

The rain continued through the interval, and the second half started much like the first with not much flow or style to the game.

Town started to grow into the game, their passing and attacking runs were starting to affect the Galway defence.

The 62nd minute saw the opening goal, when the ball broke to Kurtis Byrne who dummied the United defenders just outside the box and then fired the ball into the top corner putting the home side 1-0 up.

Galway struggled after this point with their defense under constant pressure.

Manager John Caufield made plenty of subs to try and change their luck.

It wasn't to be for the Tribesmen, The Town survived a late onslaught giving new manager Paul Doolin and his side a clean sheet and a much needed three points putting pressure on the promotion spots.
