Match Report

Galway United keep 100% record going

Galway United made it a perfect seven wins from seven with a 3-1 win over Athlone Town in Lissywollen tonight.

Franz Pierrot gave the hosts the lead following a beautiful counter attack, but a David Hurley brace alongside a calm Stephen Walsh finish in the final twenty mean Galway stay perfect.

Galway nearly took the lead in the most bizarre fashion on the half hour mark. A cross came in from the left and after it was initially defended at the near post, Noah Van Geenan went to hook it away.

The Athlone defender managed to kick it off his own head and the ball ricocheted onto the bar before Enda Minogue went up and plucked it. Needless to say, the Dutchman will have been very relieved.

The game came to life in the next ten minutes and it would be the hosts who made the breakthrough. Astonishingly, it all started when German Fuentes Rodriguez fouled Vincent Borden and the ref blew for a Galway penalty.

David Hurley stepped up but Minogue guessed right and parried his effort away. Athlone then zipped down the left with some nice play from Valerii Dolia and Jamar Campion Hinds and the latter put in a cross to the back stick. Franz Pierrot got on the end and poked it in to finish off a sublime move and put the league leaders one down.

Hurley kept the head up and redeemed himself just four minutes later. Colm Horgan cut onto his left and put in a cross from the right. Hurley rose highest with his glancing header clipping the inside of the post before going in. The sides would go into the half all square.

Galway looked the more threatening side coming out of the interval and it paid off right before the hour mark. Hurley was played through just inside the area and Galway’s #10 took it onto his right foot before curling it into the bottom corner. A lovely finish to further make up for the penalty.

The cake had its icing in the 74th minute. United moved it up the pitch at pace to Stephen Walsh. Following a one-two that set him right through on goal, Walsh kept his composure and put it around Minogue to put clear daylight between the sides.

Galway maintain their perfect start and at an already early stage it’s not controversial to say they look like certs to win the title. Athlone on the other hand continue to fluctuate and face another tricky test against Bray next week.
