Keating Sends Cork Into Semis at the Death

Two goals in the final seven minutes from Marvin Djiksteel and Ruairi Keating sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory for Cork City over Wexford in the Quarter Finals of the FAI Cup.

After a slow start to the game, it was Wexford who had the game's first chance through Darragh Levingston who forced a good save out of Ollie Byrne in the 12th minute.

Both Andri Kravchuk and Ruairi Keating went close for City minutes later but were denied by an excellent piece of defending from Cian O'Malley.

Another City player who stood out in the first half was Jaze Kabia who had two chances in the space of seven minutes but could not hit the targe on either occasion.

Despite being second best for much of the opening half, Wexford had a great chance of their own in the 37th minute when Darragh Levingston's deflected shot forced a great save from Byrne to keep the game level.

Indeed it would be the visitors who would open the scoring on the stroke of half time when Aaron Dobbs took advantage of some slack City defending before pouncing to drill the ball home and leave it 1-0 at the break.

City were quick in trying to change the game in the second half, making a double substitution, while Ruairi Keating went close forcing a great save from Owen Mason early in the second period.

At the other end Dobbs could have had a second goal on the hour mark but was unable to convert his header from Kian Corbally's corner.

City weren't going away however and eventually levelled the proceedings in the 83rd minute when substitute Marvin Djiksteel finished home to set up a grandstand finish.

Korbally nearly restored Wexford's lead two minutes later when he forced a great save from Byrne as the game was on a knifedge.

There was more drama in store, as just when it looked like the game was heading to extra time, Ruairi Keating popped up to score to seal a dramatic comeback victory for Cork City, thus putting the Rebel Army into the semi finals of the competition for the first time since 2018.
