Late Kelly peno hands Bohs draw with Dundalk
Georgie Kelly’s last gasp penalty rescued Bohemians a point as for much of this game, it looked as if Keith Long’s side would leave a pitch they dominated for periods with nothing to show for it.
Sami Ben Amar a player that has divided many opinions at Dundalk this season, was on hand to grab a first-half goal but Kelly kept his composure to slot home as a last-minute penalty to give both sides a share of the spoils.
Both clubs traded early chances to try and steal an early march with Sean Murray and Ross Tierney having sights on goal, but neither tested the respective keepers.
The first half hit a flashpoint as each team had real opportunities to take the lead in quick succession - the difference being that Bohemians squandered and Dundalk capitalised.
Andy Lyons broke free from his defensive role and his shot took a deflection off Andy Boyle to go wide for a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Georgie Kelly missed a free header from seven yards. Immediately Dundalk took advantage breaking with speed and forcing a defensive mix up that saw Talbot and Hoban contest the ball that fell loose and kindly to Sami Ben Amar who hooked the ball into an empty net.
Bohemians pressed for an equaliser but Peter Cherrie stopped Bohemians at every turn despite the consistent threat of Georgie Kelly who’s goal-bound effort late in the half looked certain to go in only for a late intervention from Greg Sloggett.
Bohemians were intent on getting an equaliser and took the game to their visitors for much of the second half with Lyons looking to test Cherrie once more only for his effort to flash wide. Cherrie would be called upon once more and like he did last week he pulled off a terrific save this time to deny Promise Omochere's long-range effort.
Dundalk had a chance to put the tie to bed when Will Patching was given the freedom Dalymount Park and he struck a low hard effort that bounced off Talbots chest, the ball fell to McMillan but he chose power over placement and his effort went over the bar.
Frustrations continued to mount for the hosts, however, the pressure valve was well and truly released when in the dying minutes of normal time they were awarded a penalty.
Initially, the referee blew for a free-kick to Dundalk after Ali Coote went down in the area but was quickly told to change his decision by his assistant and he pointed to the spot.
Kelly won’t want to watch the penalty back anytime soon as his scuffed effort crept under Cherrie, but they all count and it was for a claim of the share of the spoils.
