Cork edge Cobh in Rebel Derby
Cork City claimed the early bragging rights as they edged Cobh Ramblers 2-0 in the first Cork derby of the season.
Richie Holland was once again in the dugout in place of Colin Healy as the City boss is on temporary leave due to personal reasons.
Both sides engaged in a feeling out process early on with no rhythm being established in the initial stages. New signing Ally Gilchrist scored his first goal for Cork City with a strong header on 14 minutes to put the hosts ahead. This sparked Cork into life continued to dominate possession but could not take advantage of any chances that came their way.
It didn’t all go City’s way however as captain Cian Coleman had to come off on 28 minutes with what appeared to be a muscle injury which could put him in doubt for the Waterford game on Monday.
Cobh struggled to create any clear-cut chances in the first half but were much improved in the second half. Conor Drinan fizzed a left footed shot across the box on 59 minutes which eventually ended up in a corner but nothing came of it.
Cian Murphy got City’s second goal on 62 minutes. The Tipperary man finished from close range after a goalmouth scramble in front of the shed end. Like the first half, the goal gave the hosts a boost and there was a spring in their step for the next 10 minutes as they looked for a third.
To Cobh’s credit, the heads never dropped but the lack of quality in the final third cost them as they continued to struggle with creating chances on what was a quiet night for goalkeeper David Harrington and his City defence.
Overall, a good night’s work for Richie Holland’s side and another clean sheet to boot. They will need to be more clinical however against Waterford on Monday in what is a huge game and could have significant connotations in the race for promotion.
As for Cobh, they travel to Athlone on the same night as they look to get their first win and goal of the season.
