Four’getful night for Cobh as City win Cork derby
Four goals gave Cork City all three points and local bragging rights as they saw off neighbouring Cobh Ramblers at Turners Cross in the SSE Airtricity First Division.
Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh’s sixth minute strike gave City the edge in a close first half, but early second half goals from Barry Coffey and Cian Murphy put the tie beyond doubt before the game reached 60 minutes.
Coffey netted again with five minutes remaining to cause further embarrassment to a Cobh defence that looked shaky without its starting centre-back pairing.
Cork looked the more confident in the opening stages of the first half and it wasn’t long until the vocal home crowd had something to celebrate after Whitmarsh O’Brien’s sixth minute opener.
Left short in midfield, City’s Ronan Hurley could only boot the ball forward under pressure from Coby’s midfield cross.
Hurley’s ball however found an O’Brien Whitmarsh run up the pitch and with the Ram’s centre-backs outpaced and Sean Barron hesitant to leave his goal, Beineon had plenty of time and space to hammer home the game’s opener.
More chances followed but Cork couldn’t get a second and Cobh began to work their way into the tie.
Pierce Philip’s shot hit the City crossbar on 15 minutes, while Ian Turner’s dangerous ball into the box failed to find any Cobh attackers soon after.
Cork also threatened again and O’Brien Whitmarsh terrorised the Ramblers defence while for Cobh, Nathan O’Connell looked dangerous. Neither side could score however and City went into the break 1-0 to the good.
If the first half was a relatively even affair the second was anything but. Cork came out dominant in possession and Cobh couldn’t find a decent foothold whatsoever.
Dylan McGlade was a constant danger for City and after working his way through the Cobh defence he could only offer a weak shot to be parried away by Barron. Barry Coffey however was on hand in the Ramblers box to tap in his first goal for City after arriving on loan from Celtic.
Cork didn’t let up and put serious pressure on a Cobh defence that looked increasingly nervous devoid of its suspended centre back pairing of Charlie Lyons and Ben O’Riordan.
Less than two minutes after Coffey struck, star striker Cian Murphy followed up on a McGlade shot to make it 3-0 to the home side and put the tie to bed.
Cork were ravenous in attacking and defending their lead and clean sheet and never let up as Cobh struggled for the ball throughout.
Coffey struck again in the 85th minute to add insult to injury, much to the delight of the home support basking in a decisive Cork Derby win that sees them leapfrog their neighbours in the league.
