Cobh claim first home win over Cork in 26 years
Cobh Ramblers positive performances was finally rewarded as they delivered a first home win over Cork City in 26 years in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland First Division tonight.
A 62nd minute Jake Hegarty goal was enough to seal the bragging rights in this derby encounter.
It was a night of firsts of the season for Cobh Ramblers.
Jake Hegarty's first goal, a first home win and a first clean sheet.
It is a perfectly timed boost for Cobh, as the clubs' head into a two-week break before the next round of fixtures.
On a night where results were favourable elsewhere, Cork City missed an opportunity to make up ground in the race for fifth spot, as they suffered their first loss in four games.
Cobh's tenacity, resolve and unwillingness to surrender a third consecutive one goal advantage, was driven on by the work rate of Killian Cooper, Sean Barron and Charlie Lyons.
Colin Healy's men will feel they were the better side over the course of the match, and they held possession for long periods.
An often-scrappy affair, Cian Bargary smashed the post to announce City's arrival into the proceedings, on the 20-minute mark.
Alec Byrne had his moments too, while Dylan McGlade forced Barron to react from a free.
Cobh Ramblers weren't without their threat, Lee Devitt had speculative if harmless efforts, while Hegarty imposed himself on City's defence.
The first half reached a conclusion with Ramblers having a half-chance from a corner kick, cleared nervously away.
The early exchanges of the second half, showed City on top.
Gearoid Morrissey having an effort deflected for a corner kick, soon after he cracked the bar with Barron and the Ramblers defence completely beaten.
Bargary almost benefitted from a Sean Barron spill, who was blinded by the fading Friday sun.
It can be argued Cian Murphy's tactical yellow card for a foul on Bargary grabbed Stuart Ashton's side a much-needed break in play. Murphy injured himself in the foul and needed to be replaced.
Less than three minutes later, a Cobh corner kick saw Lee Devitt attempt a shot, but it cued up Jake Hegarty to bury the ball beyond the reach of City's Mark McNulty.
Cork City were quick to restructure following that goal and they introduced attacking reinforcements to get something from the game.
The Rams closed ranks, pushing Hegarty up top by himself, while his teammates crowded the midfield to make space a premium.
Dylan McGlade and Cian Bargary did create chances but for no reward.
Cobh held on with dogged defiance to close the gap on City to a point in the bottom three.

The reality is for both clubs, is that these are both relatively young squads and they are building for the future.
