Markey stuns Pats with last-gasp winner
Darragh Markey’s injury-time winner gave Drogheda the three points in their 2-1 win over St Patrick’s Athletic at Weavers Park.
Chris Forrester thought he had rescued a point for the Saints from the spot in the first half after Adam Foley’s stunning opener.
The Drogs ended a run of two losses in a row and moved ahead of Sligo Rovers and Cork City in the Premier Division table while halting St Pat’s four-game winning streak.
The first half began with a decent enough pace, despite the sunshine and dry pitch. Both sides were attempting to get up the field as quickly as possible with arguably a few too many long and high balls played from front to back for the game to find any real rhythm.
St Pats had slightly the better of the possession stats in the early minutes of the game, with the home side happy to press and counter.
That high press paid off for Drogheda in the 18th minute, when a corner was flapped at by Dean Lyness in the St Pats’ goal, the ball falling eventually to Dayle Rooney who played a beautifully accurate first-time pass with the outside of his foot toward Adam Foley who smashed in a howitzer of a volley into the net.
The Drogs’ lead lasted almost until the break when referee Paul McLoughlin awarded the Saints a penalty for a push on Chris Forrester by Ryan Brennan during a corner.
Forrester stepped up and rolled the ball past 17-year-old Andrew Wogan in the United goal for his tenth of the season.
Manager Kevin Doherty was livid about the penalty call and he and his staff questioned the ref’s decision after the halftime whistle was blown.
The second half got underway as the sun set and the tempo of the game raised, both sets of players moved the ball around with a bit more zip and verve.
Dean Lyness in the St Pats’ goal was the busier of the two keepers in the second period, saving first from Freddie Draper, then Dayle Rooney.
The Saints themselves were dangerous on the counterattack and almost went ahead when Conor Carty found himself bustling in on goal, only for Elicha Ahui to somehow chased him down and pulled off a last-ditch goal-saving tackle just inside the box.
As the game looked to be heading toward an honourable draw, Darragh Markey won the ball in the centre circle after the Saints had pushed players forward for a corner.
The tricky midfielder carried the ball forward before playing a one-two with Dayle Rooney and slotting past the helpless Lyness in the St Pats goal.
A good win for the home side and one they will no doubt enjoy after losing their last five in a row against the Inchicore side.
