Phillips Header Sees Waterford Edge Cobh in Extra Time

A Giles Phillips header in extra time saw Waterford overcome Cobh Ramblers 2-1 in a dramatic contest at Turners Cross.

There was no settling in period as both sides went at it from the off. Waterford enjoyed the early spell of pressure with Ronan Coughlan having the first chance of the game after five minutes. Unfortunately for the division's top scorer, he couldn't get his feet organised in time to get a proper shot away.

Conor Parsons also looked dangerous for the Blues on the wing and went close to scoring after twelve minutes although Lee Stacey did extremely well to deny him.

Cobh's first chance came in the 24th minute when Charlie Lyons's header was inches away from rattling the Waterford net as the Rams began to play themselves into the game.

The game took a physical turn as the half came to a close with three yellow cards awarded in the space of then minutes. Waterford had one last chance before the break however with Roland Idowu unable to find his feet in a goalmouth scramble for what would have been a certain goal.

That goal did come however straight after the break when Ronan Coughlan managed to run in behind the Cobh defence before slotting home to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Cobh to their credit responded well and almost equalized five minutes later when Sam Seargant was forced into making a save to deny James O'Leary who hit a brilliant half volley from forty yards out.

The game continued to become more physical as the half went on with both teams frequently clashing. Referee David Dunne accidently gave Waterford's Barry Baggley a red card in the 66th minute but quickly corrected his error as tensions began to boil over.

Cobh boss Shane Keegan who had been booked earlier, rang the changes with ten minutes to go as his side chased the equaliser. And just as all hope seemed lost for the Rams, a dangerous move by Luke Desmond eventually ended up in Matt McKevitt finding the net with a bicycle kick to level the game at 1-1 in the 89th minute and with it, extra time.

Cobh started the extra period brighter and should have been ahead within seconds as Wilson Waweru volleyed wide in front of an open goal after Seargant fumbled the clearance.

Waterford had a glorious chance of their own five minutes later as Stacey denied MacMenamy from point blank range before Seargant denied Byrne at the other end moments later.

The goal came eventually however in the 101st minute and it was centre half Giles Phillips with a powerful header which gave Waterford the lead as the Blues went in 2-1 to the good at the break.

Cobh began to push forward in the second period while Waterford appeared content to play on the break. Coughlan nearly wrapped up the tie but was denied by a last ditch tackle from Tiernan O'Brien with ten minutes left to play.

Waterford to their credit finished the stronger and held on to claim a dramatic victory and face Cork City next week with Premier Division football at stake.
