Waweru shocks Waterford at Colman’s Park

Wilson Waweru was the hero for two sides in the First Division this evening, as his strike in the second half, benefited both Cobh and Galway’s respective hopes of promotion, in a 1-0 triumph over Waterford.

The on-loan Galway forward netted his fifth goal for Cobh since joining at the start of the season, probably one of the most important as it benefits both of his teams, Galway now 13 clear at the top, Cobh holding down third in the promotion hunt.

Jack Doherty however did limp off the field with a foot related injury, that might be cause for concern for the Cobh faithful if it is a severe injury, Waterford had chances at goal but failed to beat Lee Steacy, their unbeaten record dating back to 2017 over Cobh comes to an end.

A strong defensive shift from Cobh kept Ronan Coughlan quiet all evening, while Conor Parsons, Thomas Oluwa and Barry Baggley all looked dangerous, the Cobh defence stood the test against their Munster neighbours and were deserved of their three points.

A fast start to proceedings in Cobh, both sides from the off looked destined to find the net from the word go, but despite the work rate, neither goalkeeper was summoned into making a save, a few chances needing the keepers to gather the ball to start a counter charge.

Fresh from a recent injury, Jack Doherty made his first starting appearance back in a Cobh shirt against Longford, missing the Treaty game he looked to make an early mark on proceedings this evening, but his effort from range went to the right and wide of Paul Martin’s goal.

Waterford started to get a foot in the game and their talisman up front almost got an early chance at goal, Conor Parsons taking up space on the right wing played a lovely ball for Rona Coughlan, despite the forward stretching to get a toe to it it was wide.

Wilson Waweru and Roland Idowu both restored to trying their luck from range to get the games opening goal, but at opposite ends of the field, the result was the same as neither keeper was troubled.

A minute later and Waterford worked a terrific attack to come within a whisker of the goal, Barry Baggley, Ryan Burke, Idowu and Thomas Oluwa all involved in the build up play, as they work it into the area, Coughlan got a shot at goal but it tailed to the left and wide.

Waweru cannoned the ball off the crossbar after 24 minutes, the best chance Cobh had to get the opener, the ball fell kindly to him on the edge of the area, a rooted Martin was happy to see it out for a goal kick.

The Blues however were still attacking with intent, Cobh had a solid defence who was keeping them at bay but they still had chances, Oluwa headed a corner into the hands of Lee Steacy, before he whipped a ball in toward Parsons, he shot at goal but Charlie Lyons, turned goalkeeper to clear the effort off the line.

Pressure remained on Cobh as the box remained bombarded by the Blues attackers, Jason Abbott did well to clear another dangerous Oluwa cross from the left wing, at the other end Cobh appealed for a penalty for handball as they attacked the visitors but nothing was given as they remained deadlocked at the interval.

Waterford started the second home well on the front foot, from a Cobh corner they led a great counter attack, Tunmise Sobowale looking for Coughlan in the area, the ball fell to Parsons but Luke Desmond got a block in for a corner.

The opening goal would come from a counter attack and it came immediately after Waterford had their chance, Abbott with a direct over the top through ball for Waweru to chase, Martin raced out of his goal and Waweru got enough to flick it past him, before shooting for goal, despite Sobowale’s best efforts the shot rippled the net and the hosts were ahead after 53 minutes.

Cobh almost doubled their lead after 65 minutes as Tieran O’Brien arrived at the back post to meet a Darragh O’Sullivan-Connell cross but the header was over the Waterford goal, the visitors were quick to reply at the other end, but Steacy was down quick to deny Baggley a goal from inside the area.

Waterford huffed and puffed to try and get a goal, Justin Eguaibor another of the Cobh rearguard who was in inspired form this evening, put Coughlan under pressure enough to see his shot at goal saved by Steacy.

Drama late on however as Niall O'Keeffe shot from range that found its way into the back of the Cobh net, but the offside flag was up as a deflection managed to send the ball past Stacey, the referee consulted with his assistant referee and the goal was disallowed, a massive sigh of relief from the home side as the final whistle sounded seconds later.

Game on in St Colmans Park

  • Minutes silence for Karolis Chvedukas, Joe Delaney and Billy Rocket ahead of kick off

  • Teams out on the field as we await the referee to get us underway

  • Cobh have yet to overcome Waterford since their 2017 encounter at this same venue, since then Waterford have spent the majority of their time as a Premier Division side, but since dropping down last season, have won the last six meetings in the League of Ireland between the two, can Cobh change that this evening we will have to wait and see as kick off fastly approaches

  • Five wins and a draw from their last six games, 25 goals scored and just one conceded, they have plenty of encouragement to topple Cobh for the second time of asking in the space of a month. Waterford have just three defeats this season, two coming to Galway the other to Wexford in the South-East Derby, when it has come to the Munster encounters in this Division, they are the top side having yet to suffer defeat

  • The Blues are ten points behind Galway in the table, needing another result tonight to keep them in the race, they will hope Galway can slip up against Longford, the only side they have dropped all three points too since the Tribesmen at the beginning of last month. It has been an impressive run of form from Keith Long’s side of late, since he has taken charge they look like another title contender following last season where they just missed out on promotion back to the Premier Division.

  • Six games unbeaten, Waterford come to Leeside expecting to take another three points and keep up an impressive run of scoring goals, spearheaded by the ever impressive Ronan Coughlan at the front of the attack, netting seven times and assisting twice in his last three games.

  • Eight wins so far from their 19 league games has them with a 29 point haul in fourth spot, a win tonight coupled with Athlone not getting a win over Treaty in Lissywollen would see Cobh jump to third spot, however against their Munster neighbours to the East, Cobh have felt the sting this year, heavily beaten 5-0 in the RSC at the beginning of last Month, became their second loss to the Blues this season, the first when Waterford last visited St Colmans Park, ended in a 3-1 defeat.

  • But results in recent weeks have them in good form to potentially cause Waterford another upset in their pursuit of the league title, unbeaten in their last two games brought an end to the first half of the season, now Shane Keegan’s side will look to push on in the promotion race.

  • The Rams have had a much better start to this season than over the last number of years, they look to be a firm contender for the promotion play-offs, as they have some breathing room in fourth over the chasing pack.

  • 15 minutes to kick off in this Munster derby, the Blues hoping to keep up with Galway, while Cobh try to remain destined for a spot in the play-offs

  • Waterford also go with three changes, Conor Parsons shakes off a recent knock to remain in the starting line up, Eddie Nolan, Thomas Oluwa and Tunmise Sobowale return to the starting XI, Shane Griffin drops to the bench, Giles Phillips and Dean McMenamy both drop out of the squad

  • Three changes for Cobh after their nail biting tie with Treaty last time out, Tiernan O’Brien, Pierce Phillips and Jack Doherty return to the starters, Charlie O’Brien, Liam Kervick who is on Loan from Waterford and the suspended Dale Holland all drop out

  • Good evening everyone and you are very welcome to our coverage of tonight's meeting between Cobh Ramblers and Waterford, Diarmuid Kearney here with you to update the action in what is Waterford's closest Munster Derby, no need for the boats this evening but will they have smooth sailing on the seaside this evening to keep the race going with Galway
