Match Report

Dundalk Seal Rare Away Berth

Dundalk secured a rare away win, the second of the season at the Showgrounds with a 1-0 win for the Lilywhites against Sligo Rovers.

Daryl Horgan scored midway through the first half to secure the three points in a game they dominated and controlled for large periods. Sligo did push in the latter stages of the game but a late goal from second half substitute Sam Durrant in the final minutes of the game ensured that Dundalk’s defence held firm with the attack ruthless when needed to be to take the points back to Oriel Park.

Dundalk took the game to the hosts following some initial high-tempo play from Sligo with a corner from Daryl Horgan to the near post saw the ball failing to be cleared with Louie Annesley striking the side netting. The Lilywhites were to have another opportunity with Benson's free-kick not being cleared and the second ball from Senan Mullen finding Benson running in from the initial set that saw his effort just going over.

Benson was to be the architect of the opening goal as he picked the pocket of David Cawley and released Cameron Elliot down the right flank, the Scottish striker played the ball across the box to Daryl Horgan who could take a touch to get the ball past Walsh to score. Benson was to go close himself as he picked the ball off Buckley and broke down the left forcing Walsh into an excellent save.

For Sligo they had a sight on goal to level the tie with a strike from Greg Bolger on the edge of the area that saw Sheppard pushing the ball away for a corner, the Dundalk keeper was not shy to show his fury at his defence for trying to clear the ball across the face of goal.

Dundalk continued to press for a second early in the second half with Archie Davies’ cross to O'Kane saw the midfielder first time shot blocked down inside the Sligo area with the ball being cleared. O'Kane became the provider the next time Dundalk attacked as he broke down the right and sent the ball into Sloggett whose slight touch on the flight of the ball was well saved.

Sligos next was to go from bad to worse as Robbie Burton got two yellow cards in quick succession reducing his side to ten men as the Bit O’Red began to see the red mist as indiscipline crept into their game. Burton fouled Malley and got a yellow; for his reaction to that caution and kicking the ball away, he got a second yellow. Sligo despite being down to ten men carved the best chance of the second half with a fine save coming from Nathan Sheppard to deny Brannefalk after a perfect weighted pass to the Sligo Rovers striker was dismissed on an angle with a block by the Dundalk keeper.

The game looked as if it was petering to a 1-0 when one last phase of attack from Dundalk saw Archie Davies once again send the ball down the right and hit a perfect pass to second-half sub-Sam Durrant to slot the ball home from close range to seal the tie for the Lilywhites.

Dundalk face Bohemians next week who sit in fourth, three points ahead of them with two games to go. With one eye on the cup final could this be the Greatest comeback for Europe the league has ever seen? The way this season has gone. Anything is possible and all strangely is all to play for.
