Match Report

Kelly secures Dundalk victory over Sligo

Daniel Kelly’s first half goal was the decisive moment in a contest that will be seen at seasons end of the year as a game that had more tension that flair in a tight contest at Oriel Park.

The Lilywhites kept their quest for another season in Europe with this 1-0 victory as it keeps pace with the top four coming into the business end of the season. Sligo did have efforts to not only level the tie but quite possibly win it but were left frustrated as the goal eluded them.

Both sides had a strong start to the contest as they had sights on goal but to no real avail, Daniel Kelly looked dangerous when he broke through the middle while Frank Liivak is dictating terms for the away side. Sligo had the first sight on goal with an absolute guilt edge chance to go ahead as a hooked pass from the back post found the head of Pedro Martelo but somehow he headed it wide at the far post. That was the wake-up call needed for the home side as they were to open the scoring in the next attack.

The Lilywhites open the scoring, Horgan and Sloggett combined to send the ball to Davies whose cross to the back post was met by Daniel Kelly who headed it home to score his fifth goal of the season. In a half that had very little in terms of ebb and flow the away side had a fantastic opportunity to level the tie after some intense pressure on the edge of the box Stefan Radosavljevic curled a well-placed that just went over.

The first sight of a goal in the second half went to the visitors as a dangerous free kick sent in by Johan Brannefalk was headed clear by Muller. Daniel Kelly continued to pose a threat for the Lilywhites as he cut the ball into Ryan O'Kane to collect on the edge of the area but his curling effort was well saved. Patrick Hoban went close following a cross from O'Kane and was met by the Dundalk striker but he headed it straight into the keeper's hands. Sligo almost snuck a leveller with a direct from a free kick Fabrice Hartmann opted to try and catch Nathan Sheppard off guard at the near post but the keeper palmed it across the line for a corner. Sligo continued to push with a snapshot from Pedro Martelo and saw Nathan Sheppard having to be smart with the save.

Martelo once again put Dundalk under pressure with another low effort from the right by-line, Sheppard mistimed the ball and it flew past him and whistled past the post. Dundalk then had a series of chances to double the tally as a mistake from the Sligo backline saw the ball bounce to Yli-Kokko but the Finnish midfielder shot curled over. Yli Kokko was to go close again as he broke free but his low effort took a deflection and it was easily saved. Sligo nearly had the last say in the contest as right as the referee was about to blow the full-time whistle Kailin Barlow hit a fantastic volley that Sheppard saved on the second attempt to ensure the clean sheet but more importantly the three points for the Lilywhites.
