Match Report

Moylan Hat Trick Edges Shels Past Students

A fairytale hat-trick for Jack Moylan on his final game at Tolka Park as a Shlebourne player sees the Reds overcome the challenge of UCD with a 3-2 victory in a pivotal game in Shelbourne’s hopes for qualifying for European football next season.

Moylan opened the scoring in the 20th minute, but a goalkeeping howler from Harry Fisk gave UCD a way back into the game in the second half. Another penalty from Moylan in the 61st minute was erased by UCD substitute Danu Kinsella Bishop’s 81st minute leveller.

With the game, and potentially Shelbourne’s dreams of European football next season on the line, Moylan completed his hat-trick in the 89th minute to secure all three points for his side.

Shelbourne started the brighter of the two sides with an early free-kick which struck the wall and some tidy football from Hull City loanees Will Jarvis and Harry Wood, but were unable to create a clearcut opportunity against the Students.

This trend continued for the opening stages as Shelbourne looked tentative in attack and unable to penetrate the resolute defence from the relegated side, but the home team would be given a gift in the 20th minute.

A long ball up towards Jack Moylan was miscontrolled by the Lincoln-bound midfielder and Eanna Clancy did enough to force him wide. But once Moylan was chasing the ball with his back to goal, the UCD centre-back dragged the former Bohemians man back, conceding a penalty in frustrating fashion.

Moylan stepped up to take the penalty and slotted it into the right bottom corner, scoring on his final appearance at Tolka Park as a Shelbourne player before his move to Lincoln.

The second half was the opportunity for Shelbourne to extend their lead and put their minds at ease - but instead it was the Students who got the game’s next goal in bizarre circumstances.

Jarvis played the ball back to Harry Fisk, who started the game in place of the ill Conor Kearns, but the ball bobbled up as he passed it to the path of Mikey Raggett. The UCD striker had the simple task of passing the ball into an empty net, levelling the game for his side.

UCD were the better team after this goal, but just after the hour-mark Shelbourne were given another golden opportunity to restore their lead.

Jarvis skipped away from three players and made his way into the penalty area before going down and winning his side’s second spot kick of the game. Moylan stepped up again and sent Moore the wrong way as he smashed the ball into the left top corner.

Shelbourne were settled massively by the goal, but the drama was still to come in this exhilarating game in Drumcondra.

UCD substitute Jake Doyle collected the ball on the right wing before crossing to another of his side's substitutes on the night, Danu Kinsella Bishop. Kinsella Bishop stuck a leg out and managed to flick the ball up into the air, deceiving Fisk as the ball looped over the keeper's head into the Shelbourne goal.

With UCD scoring in the 82nd minute, there was still time for Shelbourne to respond and snatch all three points. Up stepped Jack Moylan yet again.

A long ball from the Shelbourne defence was controlled beautifully by Moylan with the outside of his right foot. The touch allowed Moylan the space to get a shot off and he did just that, curling the ball around a UCD body into the bottom corner, securing all three points and sending the home faithful wild.

This result paired with the outcome in Oriel Park sees Shelbourne move up to fourth in the table ahead of Bohemians, with Shelbourne’s final game of the season taking place in Weaver’s Park in Drogheda next week.
