Match Report

UCD come back to earn valuable point at Shels

A Mark Dignam stunner cancelled out a Kameron Ledwidge opener as UCD held Shelbourne 1-1 at Tolka Park this evening.

Both sides remain in 7th and 9th respectively in a game that only really sparked into life in the second half.

Shelbourne got off to a positive start when Kameron Ledwidge burst down the left and clipped a ball into the box, but Brian McManus’ volley went over the bar.

The game was flat for most of the first half with the hosts having a lot of the ball but struggled to create any clear-cut chances. Jack Moylan and Ledwidge had efforts at goal although UCD goalkeeper Kian Moore was equal to it.

UCD knocked the ball about in patches however couldn’t register a shot on target throughout the first half. Just as the half was nearing the end, Shels broke the deadlock when a Shane Farrell corner found Ledwidge on the edge of the box who brilliantly volleyed first time into the near corner beating Moore.

Alex Nolan and Evan Caffrey were booked for the visitors whilst John Ross Wilson was booked for an off-the-ball incident by referee Sean Grant.

Thomas Lonergan replaced John Haist at the interval, and it was the substitute who was on the end of UCD’s first chance of the game as he was picked out by Caffrey, but the striker couldn’t keep his effort on target from inside the box.

The visitors did equalise out of nothing when captain Jack Keaney found Mark Dignam inside the area, who turned and swiveled before expertly rifling a ball into the corner of the net. It was a crucial slip from Shels captain Luke Byrne that allowed Dignam to twist and turn.

Gavin Molloy had a few efforts from outside the area that fizzed over the bar, but it was the visitors who went closest when a corner delivered was spilled by goalkeeper Brendan Clarke resulting in the ball dropping 3-yards out, but the hosts scrambled it away.

Shels huffed and puffed but UCD remained resolute and defended well. The match finished 1-1 and both teams now move onto their next fixtures on Friday evening.

The hosts move onto Drogheda at home on Friday whilst for the students, it is a trip up to Donegal to face bottom of the table Finn Harps.
