Shels lift silverware after draw with UCD
Shelbourne are celebrating tonight in front of their home fans as they finish the season officially Champions of the First Division.
A late YoYo Mahdy goal salvaged a draw against UCD. Home fans may wonder how they didn’t win the game as they were dominant throughout and had chances to score more.
However, as Shels fans sing late into the night, they were in jubilant mood come the final whistle.
In a game that took time to spark into life, the hosts worked well down the left wing in the early stages and Brennan had chances, finding himself in space in front of goal. Shane Farrell tried to get his team going with his dribbling style and Adam Verdon impressed for the visitors as he showed a passing range that found his team-mates in good positions.
While Shelbourne came out with all guns blazing and tested Healy in goals, through players like Rooney and Brennan; UCD's defence stood up to everything that Shels threw at them.
Then, in the 54th minute, brilliant individual skill by Dara Keane, where he turned and passed forward; placed Evan Caffrey through on goal and he slotted the ball confidently underneath the keeper.
As Shelbourne chased for a reply, O’Connor headed wide and Farrell headed over the bar. Michael O’Connor did successfully put the ball into the back of the net much to the initial jubilation of the Shelbourne support, only for the linesman to raise his flag and act as party-pooper to the Shels parade.
As both sides chased another goal, the crowd sang and got fully behind their Shelbourne heroes and eventually they broke down the UCD resistance. It was the former student, Mahdy, so impressive during his spell at Belfield, who grabbed the equaliser in the 88th minute, to ensure a release of pure emotion as red flares went off within the ground.
Shelbourne will go up as champions to the Premier Division in 2022 and the only question now is: Will their opponents tonight, go up with them? We will await the playoffs to find out.
