Match Report
Goals either side of half secure Shels win
It took just nine seconds after the restart for Jack Moylan to seal a 2-0 win for Shelbourne over UCD at Tolka Park tonight.
Seán Boyd was other goalscorer for The Reds, converting a controversial penalty just before half-time.
For the 45 minutes prior to Boyd’s opener, the game was an even contest with The Students looking more than capable.
They even tested Shels goalkeeper Brendan Clarke on occasion. A deflected Liam Kerrigan cross was tipped over the bar and Mark Dignam forced Clarke to go low and push his long-range effort out for a corner.
Shelbourne had chances of their own but nothing that made Kian Moore move too much. Shane Farrell's free-kick early on curled straight into Moore’s midriff. Boyd and Conor Kane would have chances go wide of the target.
Heading into the break UCD looked the better side, but right before the half-time whistle Shels would get their opener.
Boyd went down under what seemed like minimal contact from Michael Gallagher. Boyd stepped up to convert from the spot to send Shels into the break a goal to the good.
It would take them just nine seconds into the second-half to double their lead.
From kick-off Luke Byrne played a long ball over the top of the UCD defence for Jack Moylan to flick over Kian Moore.
The hosts dominated proceedings from then on and the third seemed inevitable when Boyd found room in the box to turn and shoot but it was straight down the throat of Moore.
JR Wilson was presented with a chance to make it three but his header at the back post failed to find the target.
Clarke was still called into action to make some highlight worthy saves.
A great reaction save from the 36 year-old denied Jack Keaney what would have been a wonder goal from 25 yards.
Despite Shelbourne’s dominance drama still ensued when Liam Kerrigan won UCD a penalty in injury-time.
Shooting into the same goal Boyd had in the first-half, Kerrigan’s luck would not be the same as Clarke saved the penalty with his feet.
Tonight’s result is Shelbourne’s fourth win in a row and they will look to make it five when they travel to Tallaght Stadium to face Shamrock Rovers on Friday.
As for UCD, they return to The Bowl on Friday to host Sligo Rovers.
