UCD and Shelbourne fail to break the deadlock
UCD played out their second 0-0 in a row after neither side managed to break the deadlock in their Dublin Derby with Shelbourne tonight.
Both sides played good football throughout and put on a physical affair, but ultimately nothing could separate them. The result was a fair one.
The opening few minutes showed promise for this one. Jack Moylan popped up just five minutes in, gathering the ball and bursting into the UCD area with it. His effort just sailed over however.
He wasn’t the only one to have a half chance for the visitors early. Shels won the ball high up two minutes later after UCD couldn’t beat their press by playing it out from the back. The ball fell to John Ross Wilson, who took it onto his left, but his effort was blocked and UCD eventually dealt with the pressure.
UCD started to look lively after the opening ten. Colm Whelan found the ball at his feet and turned in the box, looking to drill a low cross to Mark Dignam. Dignam’s flick looked like it was going in after a deflection, but trickled just wide.
Whelan’s fellow underage international Liam Kerrigan also popped up on the half hour mark, bursting forward with the ball and firing it at goal, just missing by inches. The games’ tempo remained tame until half time.
Just three minutes into the second half, tensions rose. Aaron O’Driscoll hit Dignam with a tough challenge and the students took serious issue with that and made sure to let O’Driscoll and the ref know.
The players argued for a moment or two, which ended in the ref handing out yellow cards to O’Driscoll for the foul as well as Jack Keaney and John Ross Wilson for their part in the melee.
With just over 15 minutes to go we got a delay. A faulty sprinkler went off and no one seemed to know how to handle it. Just as the groundsman decided to use his wheelbarrow to cover the sprinkler, a second one went off. The groundsman repeated his trick and eventually the game continued. It meant that at least eight minutes were tacked on, however.
The game would hit the 100 minute mark but it wasn’t enough time for either side. Very much a glass half full or glass half empty affair for both teams.

Luke Byrne went down with an injury. Yet again, more minutes likely added onto injury time.
Chance fell to Whelan but he can't get his feet right.
Game resumes with each side having ten men, but it appears both can continue.
Sean Brennan and Conor Kane clash heads just as the fourth official announces eight minutes are to be added on. Likely a few more tacked onto that now.
A Kane cross is gathered safely by Lorcan Healy.
We can resume after the groundsman uses a wheelbarrow to block the sprinklers.
A second sprinkler has just gone off. No end in sight.

Game is delayed due to a faulty sprinkler.
Dawkins is told off by the ref for dissent, but avoids a booking.
Duffy finds himself one on one with Webb who's quick off his line to deal with the danger. Duffy popping up in some dangerous spots.
Kerrigan plays a lovely switch to Dylan Duffy in the Shels area, but he just can't control it. O'Driscoll comes away with the ball.
Kane cuts onto his right but his tame effort means Lorcan Healy can collect with ease.
Moylan gets an effort off in the UCD box but can't get his feet right and slices it wide.
Keaney meets a header from a corner and sends it just over.
Keaney sends it just over. An impressive strike, nonetheless.
Hawkins is pulled for foul on Kerrigan. Shels were stunned at the decision.
O'Driscoll is booked for a rough tackle on Dignam. UCD take umbrage with the tackle and a bit of argy bargy ensues. Keaney is booked for UCD and John Ross Wilson is booked for Shels.
Shels start the second half. No changes to either side.
Half time.
A Kane switch hits Verdon and Shels want the already booked man flagged for a handball. Nothing comes of it.
McManus is booked for a tackle on Kerrigan that was essentially, a rugby tackle.
Moylan bursts forward and gets a shot off, just hitting it over. Shels could do with getting him more involved.
Kane floats in a cross that almost ends up in the net. Hits the roof of the goal instead.
Verdon is booked for a foul on Boyd.
A cross goes into Sean Boyd and he opts to head it down for a teammate rather than head towards goal himself. Given the space he had, he arguably should have been a bit more selfish.
Kerrigan bursts forward and lashes a shot goal-wards, sending it just wide. Nice play from the underage international.
Hawkins comes on.
Sub already for Shels. McEniff is off.
Dignam pops up again, getting the ball way out, turning and shooting. Effort was simple for Webb, but UCD have looked more dangerous since the opening ten.
Brennan bursts into the box and goes down under a challenge. Ref waves it away however.
Whelan feeds it to Dignam who has his close range effort blocked. Nothing comes of it, but that's UCD's best passage of play so far.
Brian McManus has a long range effort dip too late. Shels are having quite a few half chances.
John Ross Wilson has an effort blocked after Shels won the ball high up through some pressing. Starting to assert themselves.
Moylan goes on an incredible run but a goal doesn't come of it. An early warning sign for UCD.

UCD team is also in. They've also made three changes, as Evan Osam, Mark Dignam and Adam Verdon come in.
The Shelbourne lineup is in. Three changes to the team that bet Drogheda.
UCD actually have a decent record vs Shels, having drawn two and winning one out of their last three encounters. A win tonight would be a very welcome result.
Shels come into this one looking to follow up on an impressive win Friday away to Drogheda. UCD on the other hand are looking for their first win of the season.
